The Movie Dirty Dozen

Alex J. Cavanaugh has initiated The Movie Dirty Dozen blog hop. Great idea! Who doesn't love the movies? :) Make sure you click on Alex's link above to check out his post and find the links to everyone else involved. It's sure to be a lot of fun to compare our faves :)

So, without further ado, here are my top 12 favourite movies!

12. Can't decide: To Kill a Mockingbird. Singing in the Rain. White Christmas. Rocky Horror Picture Show. Toy Story. Chicago. Miracle on 34th Street. Miss Congeniality. Oklahoma. :)  ... *sigh* (I know, all over the place!)
11. Blind Side. Incredible story. This one touched my heart. I've only seen it once, but several scenes are pretty much engraved in my brain. I've taught kids in pretty tough situations, but thankfully none in as difficult a situation as Michael. This story of perseverence, courage and above all love really touched me.

10. Planet of the Apes (the original). I loved this entire series when I was a kid. The scene at the end with the Statue of Liberty was such a Wow! moment. Made me want to be an astronaut and believe in time travel. Love it!

9. The Matrix. Great concept. Loved the idea of the phone entry, the fake reality, and the moves. Lots of fun in this one.

8. Bourne Identity. I enjoyed the entire trilogy, but the 2nd and 3rd movies are so vastly different from the books that they kind of drive me crazy. I keep wanting to say, "But that shouldn't happen..." Nevertheless, I enjoyed this fun adventure. Damon's great and the action is fun!

7. The Sound of Music. Yeah - most of my pics are fantasy & science fiction, but I've loved this movie from the first moment. The music and the story line get me each time I watch it. Powerful stuff in there. I do believe I can sing every word. Not well perhaps, but I can sing them! My mom has this record album - yes, record! - and I listened to it repeatedly growing up.

6. X-Men. #1. Love the characters. In fact, I love the entire concept. Mutants. Will this be the way our futures will look? And will it be deliberate or accidental? Hmmm.... :)

5. Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home. I love Star Trek - always have. I think this is my favourite movie of them all. Even though some of the movies are bad, really bad :), they're Star Trek so that means I love them! This one has great humour and a sense of fun. My favourite scene? Spock on the bus! Or maybe Spock swimming with the whales. :)

4. Serenity. This Josh Whedon series (Firefly) is amazing. Great characters, fun story lines that always say more than they seem to say, and great humour. Although I always tear up when they land ... no spoilers, but if you're a fan you know the scene I'm talking about. Breaks my heart every time.

3. Star Wars - the orignial trilogy. I grew up with these movies and love them more than #1-3. Lucas is amazing. His technologies and special effects are mind boggling - as is his imagination. Favourite character? R2D2. Who knew you could say so much and feel so much with no words and no heart? :) Or maybe, Chewie...

2. Wizard of Oz. I've always loved it. The monkeys scared my sister and she wouldn't watch it with me when we were little. It used to come on once a year, and my family always let me watch it on our one TV, even though no one else loved it. The magic, the power of home/family/love and the message that kids can have some power too - awesome! And we get to hear Judy sing!

1. Lord of the Rings. And, yes, I'm cheating and taking the entire trilogy :) I was so worried when this movie came out. I don't like when they make movies of my favourite books. The movies rarely live up to the mood or the theme or the characterization or the... Even though these movies are different from the book - obviously they had to be - otherwise the movies would have been days long! - I think they did a great job staying true to the voice of the books. I think Tolkein would be quite happy.

So there you have it. My favourite movies. At the moment. :)

What's your all-time favourite movie? The one you watch every time it shows up on TV?

Star Trek 4? Really? I worked in a comic book store for three years and that movie is "the one that shall not be spoken of unless you want to see a trekkie freak out."

Although the scene when Scotty is talking to the computer is awesome. Comedic Gold!

Everything else on your list is amazing.

Erinn said...

Goonies
Princess Bride
Shawshank Redemption
Ever After
You've got mail
Serenity
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Any of the Toy Story Movies.

Jemi Fraser said...

Erinn - I know! I love all the Trek movies - even the bad ones! And Scotty is priceless! :)

I haven't seen a couple on your list, but the ones I have I love! :)

I posted mine at Alex's site in alphabetical order as I was not able to have a number one movie. We didn't have any of the same movies onour list, but I do like your choices.

Jemi, we have similar tastes in movies! Star Trek IV is my favorite, too - must be the whales.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Good stuff, Jemi! And you selected Serenity, too. LOTR seems to be on everyone's list.
Thanks for participating!

Jemi Fraser said...

Stephen - sounds interesting! I can't wait to see your choices - but it won't be until after work. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Karen - sounds like we have some similar tastes! I haven't seen Splendor in the Grass - I'll have to check it out.

And, yes, I'm nothing if not eclectic!

I haven't seen Avatar yet - will check it out in the summer.

Alex - I love Serenity - the series and movie are ones I can watch over and over again. :) Thanks for creating the blog fest - lots of fun!

Mari said...

We're totally aligned Jemi! I love all the movies you do, except the ones I haven't seen yet, heh. I'm putting the unknown favs of yours on a to-watch list. ;)

Ah, a small typo you might have missed: "when we were litte"

Cool list! :D

Aubrie said...

Great list! LOTR is my #1 as well. And Star Wars is definitely up there. Planet of the apes is awesome! Ah Charleton Heston. I miss him.

Mason Canyon said...

Nice selections of movies. Planet of the Apes (the original) is one I haven't seen in a long time. I think I'll have to check out my VCR collection (yes, I still have one) and watch this soon.

Oh my, let's see.
Like you - The Wizard of Oz
Then - The English Patient, Any Altman movie, Five Easy Pieces, Women in Love, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Gosford Park (I know, it is an Altman but it gets a special mention) Finding Nemo, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Tampopo (amazing Japanese movie), Truffault's Small Change, and uh, Cinema Paradisio.
God, I could go on and on. Bye now!

Renae said...

Great selection! I have not seen Serenity though it looks really good! I had a hard time narrowing my list!

A good selection, but being of a musical nature I love The Sound Of Music,

Have a good day.

I have always loved TOP GUN. It was the first video (VHS, of course) I ever bought and I just recently reacquired it on DVD.

Southpaw said...

I teat up to when they land (Serenity). It's hard to just choose 12, so I like the way you snuck in more.

Lisa Gail Green said...

There are too many to choose from! I love your list. I would probably add The Princess Bride and How to Train Your Dragon...

Lindsay said...

Wow, great list. I love the Wizard of Oz too. :)

Lola Sharp said...

Fun list! I like all those movies. LOTR and Matrix would make my top 12 list.

I hope your weekend was wonderful. I know you are counting down the days...school is almost out!!!

Love,
Lola

Jackee said...

Great list! And definitely your personality, so open to variety and honest about yourself. I agree with 11 and 1, but I'd also add Goonies, HP1, Back 2 the Future, and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Beth Zimmerman said...

I'm not really a movie watcher but lemme think ...

The Princess Bride
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Return to Me
Any Indiana Jones (except the Temple of Doom - too creepy)
Any Star Trek (I still remember laughing at Spock trying to swear! And I even thought the new one was pretty good. Not sure I dare mention that to Alex though!)
Fiddler on the Roof
James Bond movies with Sean Connery in them
The old Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellars in them.
Lord of the Rings (all of them!)
Veggie Tales (because they make me laugh and I love the gentle character instruction)
Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea
etc.
:)

Talli Roland said...

Love the list, Jemi! I loved the Matrix and The Sound of Music. I'm more of a rom-com kinda gal but I do enjoy a good sci-fi flick every once in awhile.

I have an award for you over at my place for being an supporting and encouraging blogger. Thanks!

Julie Dao said...

OMG so excited that you love Lord of the Rings. That trilogy has got to be my #1 favorite of all time. I could watch it over and over. My mom says that if they ever did a remake, I would be able to play any character because I know practically every line. Pathetic but true. And Sound of Music? Wizard of Oz? Totally in my top 10!

JKB said...

Fun fact:

I've been living in Germany for seven almost eight years now, and no. german. i. have. ever. asked knows the movie the Sound of Music.

I had to buy a copy and show the in-laws, and they almost busted their guts laughing.

Pretty sad.

Jemi Fraser said...

Mari - why am I not really surprised! I'm glad you've maybe found some new ones to check out!

Thanks for the typo heads-up - so much for my editing skills :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Aubrie - I miss Heston too - he did so many great movies - and he had a way of just looking that worked so well :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Mason - I love the Apes series :)

And I have a VCR collection too! I tried buying some blank tapes recently - not an easy thing to find anymore!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jan - I haven't seen very many on your list! I'm going to try to check out a few over the summer. I loved One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest too!

Jemi Fraser said...

Renae - I LOVE Serenity. I actually like the series (Firefly) better than the movie - probably because of the ending. I like totally happy endings :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Yvonne - me too. I've probably seen it and the Wizard of Oz the most times. I wonder if I need the actual movie any more, or if I can just watch them in my head :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Mary - I enjoyed Top Gun, but got too stressed during it to put it on my list. My hubby really enjoys it - great acting in that one!

Jemi Fraser said...

Southpaw - Serenity has such a well done - but I do tear up too. I always want my happy-ever-afters :)

Thanks for dropping by!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lisa Gail - I agree - there are SO many good ones! I haven't seen How to Train Your Dragon yet - I'm going to have to rent it in the summer - it looks like so much fun!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lindsay - thanks! :)

The Wizard of Oz amazes me - so much depth - and it's been around for so many years. It's still so popular with kids!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lola - Those are such fun movies!

Thanks for the thoughts - the countdowns getting closer! Come on summer!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jackee - I can't believe I forgot all about Harry Potter! I love those movies.

Back to the Future was also so good - gotta love Michael J Fox!

Jemi Fraser said...

Beth - you've listed even more of my faves!

I love Anne in any of her incarnations - such a delight!!

James Bond & Pink Panther - awesome.

I have to admit I never watched Indiana Jones because of the snake pit! Coward!

Jemi Fraser said...

Talli - I do enjoy romantic comedies too. Miss Congeniality is probably my fave of those - I get sucked into watching at least part of it every single time it's on! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Lee - there are some pretty popular ones on the list! I'll be getting around to blogs after supper tonight! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynn - those characters will probably last forever - they're so real and vital!

Thanks so much - I'll pop on over in a bit to check it out :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Julie - I'm with you! Between the 2 of us we could probably play all the parts and never need a script! It would be fun :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Jen - that is WILD! I can't believe no one over there knows it!! I bet they thought the entire thing was bizarre - I think it's one of those you have to grow up with to love :)

Michelle Gregory said...

how could i have forgotten Star Trek 4? great movie. and LOTR - well, we watch one of the 3 so often around here that i'm actually getting kind of tired of them (2 teen boys, need i say more?). we can quote dialogue.

WritingNut said...

What a list! I love so many of them.

I watched The Sound of Music for the first time when I was 6 and I asked Santa to bring it for me for Christmas.

I also REALLY love The Goonies - I always watch it when comes on. And Anne of Green Gables - the version with Megan Follows.

Ummm, Serendipity (EVERY Christmas). And Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth version).

Sigh, I think there might be too many to name, but those are some of my favorites.

Tamara Hart Heiner said...

I could've written most of this post.

Love Star Trek 4. "Computer. Hello, computer!" and of course there are no movies like the original Star Wars. But LOTR will forever reign as the best movie(s) ever.

Alix said...

Great list and fun topic too :-) I agree with almost everything but have to admit to falling asleep in LOTR, the last film is endless!

I would add Its a Wonderful Life and Love Actually, it's not Christmas without them!

The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca and Four Weddings and a Funneral.

Anonymous said...

So many of these I haven't watched, and will definitely have to check them out soon. The only Star Trek movie I've watched is the newest one, Reboot (I actually just watched it a few days ago) but I really, really liked it.

It's not my all-time favorite, but I re-watch While You Were Sleeping every Christmas. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Michelle - I think I could probably quote a bit myself. Sadly my family thinks I'm nuts as they have no interest in fantasy :)

Glad to 'meet' another Trek fan! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

WN - those are some great ones! A lot of people have mentioned Goonies, but I don't think I've ever seen it. I'll definitely have to check it out!

Jemi Fraser said...

Tamara - yes! I love when Scotty tries to get the computer to work - and the manager's expression is priceless!

LotR & Star Wars are epic! Love them :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Alexa - I do think they could cut the last whole section in the 3rd LotR - in the book & the movie. The ending drags on forever!

I love It's a Wonderful Life & Casablanca too. Can't watch Philadelphia Story - I sob. It's not pretty!

Jemi Fraser said...

Sandy - I love Star Trek - have since I saw my first rerun when I was little!

My sister loves While You Were Sleeping - I can't get past the lying part - it makes me so uncomfortable. One of these days, I'll have to watch the whole thing! :)

Unknown said...

Jemi I loved the Blind Side, one that is on the shelves for sure! I couldn't pick one, I was trying to think of one favorite and twenty came to mind!!! Too many wonderful one's to choose!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jen - isn't it fun? My family talked about it for days while I was trying to put together my list. Our lists were so different, but we all liked at least a couple on each others' lists. :)

Kathi Oram Peterson said...

It's always so interesting to see what movies others liked. I'm with you on quite a few. I had not idea you liked Star Trek. I'm a trekkie, too. And I loved Serenity. And I'm so glad to see your #1 as Lord of the Rings!!! YES!!! Best movie ever made.

Fun post!

Jemi Fraser said...

Kathi - It is so much fun to see what other people enjoy!

I've loved Trek for years - since I saw my first rerun when I was a kid :)

And LotR - yes, best ever!

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Nice list!

I haven't watched Blind Side yet, but keep hearing it's wonderful!

Jemi Fraser said...

Elizabeth - I actually saw Blind Side in the theatres - which is a bit of a treat for me! I think you would enjoy it. :)

Karen Strong said...

Oooh, you have some good ones on your list.

I do really love THE LORD OF THE RINGS -- every time it comes on TV, I stop whatever I'm doing and watch it. Ha.

I'm trying to figure out who your favorite would be? Frodo? Legolas? Gollum? Ha.

Aw, now I'm going to be saying "My precious" the rest of the night...

Jemi Fraser said...

Karen - My precious... :) Love it.

Favourite character - Legolas or Sam :)

I always watch the trilogy when I'm wrapping Christmas presents - odd sort of ritual, but I love it!

lisa and laura said...

Jemi - Your list is SO random. Love it.

As for my all-time favorite movie...that's HARD. Hmmm...I love When Harry Met Sally, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Away We Go, Juno, Superbad...the list could go on and on and on. Now that I'm typing this I'm realizing that I'm pretty random too. Ha!

Helen Ginger said...

What amazes me is that I've seen every one of those! And I liked them all.

VR Barkowski said...

Great choices, Jemi! My two favorite movies are The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Chocolat. Which, now that I think about it, pretty much much sum up who I am. :-o

Natasha said...

Fabulous list.
Question from a parent to a teacher. Should I watch Blind Side with or without the kids ( 6 1/2 and 4 1/2).

Elliot Grace said...

...your list is the first one I've seen thus far in which I've viewed every one:)

I enjoyed "Voyage Home" also, but don't tell any Trekkies I said that.

Fave of all time? That's tough considering the family of movie buffs in my house.

"Shawshank Redemption" is near the top, but I'll keep thinking:)

Jessica Bell said...

Interesting hoices JJ. Was it you who said you can't handle crying for hours on end after a film on my blog? I can see that through these. They're all very visually stimulating but they got no 'heart' for me.

Unknown said...

Hi Jemi.

A good varied selection you have there.

Check mine out. I have a few thrillers, a couple of comedies, even a kid's film and a chick-flick.

I resisted including the LOTR films. Everyone loves them; it goes without saying (But I said it anyway. Couldn't resist mentioning them!)

Jemi Fraser said...

Lisa & Laura - random is a really good word for it! I'm glad I'm not the only one :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Helen - wow! That's neat!

I've visited quite a few of these so far and I don't think I've come across a list where I've seen everything yet! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

VR - Rocky Horror & Chocolat - love it! What a great combination :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Rayna - thanks :)

I think I'd watch it without the kids. Some of the scenes of Michael's life before he finds his 'new' family are pretty intense. I think it might be too much for the kids.

Jemi Fraser said...

Elliot - I know - there's a real dislike of Voyage Home by so many Trekkies! I love the humour of it!

Shawshank Rebellion is too intense for me - my kids watched it (loved it) and vetoed it for me. They know how upset I get and how long those kinds of movies stay with me.

Jemi Fraser said...

Jess - yup that was me! I'm not able to handle the really intense ones. It's just too much. I think it comes from teaching kids is tough situations - everything is too real. Or else I'm just a sap :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Dave - I'll check yours out in a bit!

Actually I'm the only one in my family and circle of friends who loves LotR. None of them enjoy fantasy or science fiction at all. I have to resort to bribery to see any of these at the movies!

Anonymous said...

Yay - it's letting me leave a comment! (I've had some trouble doing this lately on your blog.)

Although I think of Whale Rider as my favorite movie, the one I always seem to watch when it comes on is Forrest Gump. Never gets old.

Elana Johnson said...

Yes! Finally, I've found someone who listed all 12 movies that I have actually seen -- and LIKED! I knew we were soul sisters. *happy sigh*

Tiana Smith said...

I loved the Blindside. I've actually been wanting to buy it, because like you, I've only seen it once but I immediately knew that I wanted it as part of my collection. And surprisingly, like Elana, I'm also impressed that I've seen almost everything off your list :)

Elizabeth Mueller said...

Jemi, I love all the movies you've listed here! It's so hard to limit all the movies I love down do 12! I love Star Trek 4, too!! ;)

Jemi Fraser said...

Layinda - I've actually never seen either of those movies. Even though my kids say otherwise I think Gump would upset me (did I mention I'm a wimp? :)) - one of these days I'll have to watch it!

Sometimes Blogger doesn't like me very much. I have no clue why you wouldn't be able to comment! That's odd....

Jemi Fraser said...

Elana - yay! Soul sisters it is! It's always fun to see how different people react to different movies :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Tiana - I have to buy Blind Side too - or else put it on my birthday wish list :) It's a wonderful story!

Jemi Fraser said...

Elizabeth - yay - another Star Trek 4 fan! I found it so much fun :) I love so many sci-fi & fantasy movies and books - maybe that's the genre I should be writing! :)

Creative Chronicler said...

Nice eclectic blend!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks CC - I do tend to be kind of all over the place. Comes from that right brain I think - it used to drive my dad crazy! :)

Loved the Blind Side. And the original Star Wars trilogy was awesome. The next one was a mess.

What movies do I always stop at? My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Groundhog Day, Mars Attacks, Heathers, Accidental Tourist, Better Off Dead, The Birdcage, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club.

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Four of your movies would probably end up on my list. Matrix, Star Wars, Serentity, and Lord of the Rings Trilogy. There are SOOOOO many great movies to pick from that I would literally drive myself crazy attempting to choose. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Mohamed - yes! It's such a great scene. I remember thinking how cool it was at the time & I still do :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Theresa - I agree - the original Star Wars trilogy is so much stronger than the more recent one.

I enjoyed Greek Wedding :) I've only seen it once, I'll have to watch it again one day!

Hands down, The Princess Bride. It has everything.

"Is this a kissing book?"

Oh, it is so much more!

Stina said...

Yes!!!! I've seen a lot of these movies on your list. The last blog I visited who'd done this listed maybe one movie I'd seen. (and I wasn't even positive I'd seen it).

Jemi Fraser said...

Cat - I know I saw the Princess Bride when I was younger, but I don't remember it all. So many people have mentioned it, I'm going to have to check it out again.

Jemi Fraser said...

Stina - I ran into that a few times as well. It's so interesting to see how our tastes vary. Most of my family wouldn't vote for most of the ones on my list, so I know I can be a bit unusual :)

Ann Best said...

Jemi: Thanks for commenting on my two-dog pizza day post. That brought me here. What a lot of comments! Which means everyone loves movies!! I grew up on the movies of the 40s and 50s. They were my life. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all-time favorites, a rare case of the movie being as good as the book, or as close as you can get.

I saw the old South Pacific a dozen times, and recently I watched the remake with Glenn Close. I LOVE the remake.

But there are just so many favorites, as everyone above has noted. So many excellent ones in every genre. What would we do without them?!!

Elizabeth Mueller said...

Hi Jemi!! ;)

Patricia Stoltey said...

My husband and I love Overboard with Goldie Hawn. It's charming and tame and funny enough to make us laugh out loud. I think we've watched it at least five times.

I enjoyed all of the movies on your list, but think the Lord of the Rings trilogy is something I'll go back and watch again one of these days. Great stuff.

Jemi Fraser said...

Ann - you're right - it's so much fun when we all have different choices!

I enjoy the original South Pacific - haven't seen the new one yet. I'll have to put it on my list :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Hi Elizabeth - hope you're having a good day!

Jemi Fraser said...

Pat - I love Overboard too! It's such a fun movie :)

I find LotR very re-watchable (new word alert!) - there's just something about it. Mind you I've read the books multiple times too!

lisa and laura said...

I loved The Blind Side as well. I think my all-time favorite movie would have to be The Money Pit. I always laugh at that movie! I also think Old School is hilarious and Anchor Man--I love Will Ferrell.

Jemi Fraser said...

Lila - the Money Pit!!! I forgot all about that one! We were buying a house when we first saw it & we laughed so hard when we watched it we all cried! When the bathtub goes through & Tom Hanks laugh - hysterical!

I'm so glad you mentioned it! :)

Anne Spollen said...

I would never have pegged you as a Star Wars fan!

I'm a sucker for the old, creaky Jane Eyre and also Napoleon Dynamite. Tell me that isn't an interesting combo!

Jemi Fraser said...

Anne - I love my fantasy! :)

I think Jane Eyre & Napoleon Dynamite may be the strangest combination I've seen yet! I love it! :)

cleemckenzie said...
