Love Means Nothing

'Love Means Nothing' --- isn't that a great marketing slogan for a tennis tournament? Love it (pun intended...sorry :)).

Anyway... that's the slogan for the Roger's Cup tennis tournament in Toronto this week. I spent some of the past week down in Toronto enjoying the tournament and with no Internet access. In fact I didn't have a computer with me at all - no writing, no email, no blogging, no Twitter. We were at the stadium for over 12 hours each day and the tennis was SO good, I didn't even miss it :)

I had my Kindle with me for the ride down and back and it was fabulous! I often sit cross-legged or with my feet up on the dash when I'm in the car and I set the Kindle in my lap. I liked not having to use 2 hands (or even 1 hand!) to hold open a book and it was very easy to read in the sun. I finished Nowhere to Hide by Terry O'Dell. FANTASTIC!! It's a great romantic suspense story - check it out :)

I missed most of WriteOnCon and I'll be catching up on the website for all the goodies I missed there.

So, did I miss anything else?

What's another favourite marketing slogan that makes you smile?

Sounds like an awesome trip! Yay--you got a Kindle! :) And, I have to admit, my kindle really is growing on me.

Jemi Fraser said...

It was a great trip :)

And the Kindle is aweseom for trips. I don't use it as much in the house, but for outside and car it is perfect!

RosieC said...

Hahaha. Yeah, that took me a minute, not being a huge tennis fan. Heh.

Sounds like you had fun. Jealous of the Kindle.

WriteOnCon was fabulous. I didn't do ANYTHING else for three days :) I hope you get as much out of it as I did.

Jemi Fraser said...

Rosie - I thought it was a great slogan :)

I loved the first day of WriteOnCon, but missed the rest - hopefully I can get it all read over the next few days. Day 1 was fantastic.

Not being a tennis fan, it took me a few seconds to understand the slogan. But oh, that's such a great slogan!

I'm glad you had a good time.

I can remember being really confused that love meant nothing when I was a kid. We went to Wimbledon a few years ago. Saw Henman get into the semi-finals. It was brilliant. Glad you're still enjoying the Kindle.

Jemi Fraser said...

Sandy - I thought it was so fun! It made me think for a few seconds too and I'm a HUGE tennis fan :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Rosalind - tennis is not an easy game to learn to score. It can get pretty confusing.

I would have loved to have seen Henman win Wimbledon - such a great guy and player. :)

Great slogan!

Your Kindle komments make me think about getting one - it would be great for car/train/bus rides.

Terra said...

Oh, I hope you weren't driving, ha ha! Feet up and Kindle in your lap, excuse my silly joke. The slogan is funny.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

You know my Friday posts always contain highlights of the week.

And "Wanna get away?" always makes me smile - funny commercials.

Summer Ross said...

I'm glad you had a good time. I don't have a kindle but if my grants are good this year I might think about getting one.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

You already commented on my post today!

Jemi Fraser said...

Anne - it is great, isn't it? :)

I'm definitely loving the Kindle - it was fabulous for the trip!

Jemi Fraser said...

Terra - lol :) Nope, my hubby was driving - so I got to read a lot!

Jemi Fraser said...

Diane - I don't think I've seen the Wanna Get Away commercials - we often get different ones up here in Canada.

I'll definitely have to check out your Friday post - doing catch up is hard!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Summer. I wouldn't have a Kindle either if it wasn't for my family all chipping in to get me one for my birthday :)

RHYTHM AND RHYME said...

A good slogan, never thought of that.

Yvonne.

Jemi Fraser said...

Alex - I did! I'm getting caught up slowly - so much going on here too :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Yvonne - I think that's why I like it - it makes me pause and then smile :)

Patti Lacy said...

Oh, as a former college tennis player, I LOVE to watch matches!

Hmmm. Advertising slogan. I'm not big on marketing; maybe this is why.

All I can think of are OLD jingles:
You deserve a break today...
Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh, what a relief it is.

Urghhh.

Patti

Jemi Fraser said...

Patti - I got to see a lot of great matches - Federer had 2 fabulous comebacks - hoping he can make it 3 after the rain delay :)

"You deserve a break today..." was one of Barry Manilow's jingles :)

Alka Seltzer is another fun one - I think I'll always know that one!

Don't have a Kindle but right now I'm loving the iPad. My computer crashed and I'm using it to surf the web. Here's an oldie: Where's the beef?

Unknown said...

The tennis sounds like it was amazing.
I've just got back from my week in Ibiza; I relaxed to the point where horizontal was the new vertical ;)
I think my favourite ad slogan is:
Probably the best lager in the world
I love the subtle nuance in that phrase and the many outlandish claim they've been able to make because of it.

Mari said...

Sounds like you had a great time! It's great to have a pause on everything and do nothing related to our main focus, be it writing or whatever else. Also, have some quiet reading time is fantastic! I'm happy for you. :)

Glad you had a great time and I am so jealous of your Kindle.

Glad you're enjoying your kindle! :) I'm taking my sony E reader with me on my trip this week.

What a fun trip! Wish I had a kindle. I've been holding out, but probably won't for much longer!

Jemi Fraser said...

Helen - it's so nice you have your hubby's iPad to use as a back up!

'Where's the beef?' brings back memories! That little old lady they used in the ads was awesome!

Jemi Fraser said...

Elaine - it really was great tennis! Loved every minute :)

I hadn't heard that slogan, but you're right - using the Probably in there makes it really, really work!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Mari - it really was awesome :)

Having time to read and relax and focus on nothing from my 'real' world was terrific!

Jemi Fraser said...

Mary - thanks!

The Kindle was fabulous for travelling! I'm so glad my family bought it for me :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Alexa - it really was terrific! We had a great time :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Aubrie - Thanks - it's great :)

I know you'll love travelling with your ereader! It's so convenient!

Jemi Fraser said...

Carol - thanks! If my family hadn't all chipped in for my birthday I wouldn't have one either. I LOVED it for the trip :)

Sorry, I'll try again with all the words.

"I often sit cross-legged or with my feet up on the dash when I'm in the car and I set the Kindle in my lap." I had the same thought as Terra: I hoped you weren't driving. Although, when I lived In Seattle, I wouldn't have been surprised to see this in morning commuter traffic. :)

Sounds like a fantastic week and what a great slogan! WriteOnCon was amazing. Make sure to check out the archives. Awesome!

Stephanie Thornton said...

Hehe... I'm assuming you aren't driving when you sit like that. I always stick my feet on the dash when the hubby drives, but I can't read in the car anymore. I wish I could!

Great slogan, BTW!

Jackee said...

Not anything else! WriteOnCon pretty much sucked my week away but what an amazing experience it was! Way worth the sucking. LOL

I'm glad you are loving your Kindle. Have a great week, Jemi! :o)

omgosh I don't think I could have survived without my computer or the internet. Glad you at least had the kindle :) Glad too you had such an awesome time.

~Jamie said...

I hope you enjoy writeoncon even though you weren't able to attend it in real time. (confession: anything I didn't preview watch before the conference, I had to get caught up with after it was over) :)

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Love it! That's a wonderful slogan. :)

I'm looking at getting a Kindle for Christmas...I think it's getting to be time to make the plunge!

Jemi Fraser said...

VR - yeah - definitely NOT driving!! :) My hubby hates not driving, so it's mostly him driving and me getting some reading time.

I've been looking at some of the WriteOnCon - it really is incredible!

Jemi Fraser said...

Stephanie - lol - my hubby prefers to drive when he's in a vehicle so I was definitely in the passenger seat! :)

I love slogans - they make me smile!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Jackee! I rarely (twice in the past 10 years) go on vacation. I couldn't believe it was the same time as WriteOnCon!!! My timing isn't very good :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynda - I didn't even really have time to miss it! We were at the tennis for well over 12 hours most days then we were too brain dead for much else -- drained from the heat and humidity. So it was all good :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Karen - I would absolutely recommend an ereader for travelling - it was the absolute best!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jamie - you ladies were so busy! It was an amazing event. I'm so impressed with the work and effort everyone put in - just wonderful! Thanks so much to everyone involved :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Elizabeth - you do a fair amount of travelling I think for family & your books right??? I absolutely loved it! It charges either in the wall of via computer too - easy peasy!

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Sounds like a wonderful time. I'm putting an ebook reader on my Christmas list this year. Still can't decide which one.

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - it was wonderful!

I went with the Kindle for a variety of reasons, one of which was it was the most convenient for me in Canada.

There's a post a few weeks back where I got great input about all kinds of ereaders from all kinds of people. There's a lot of great hints on that post!

Although I need an eReader, iPhones are first on the priority list. I can't see reading a book from aniPhone. Too small. But a Kindle or the Sony Reader will work just fine.

Stephen Tremp

Jemi Fraser said...

Stephen - I agree - I know some people are able to read off those small screens, but I can't do it. My eyes have a hard enough time throughout the day without adding that tiny screen into it :)

WriteOnCon was amazing, I learned so much and I'm still taking it all in!

Great slogan!!! I don't know about one's I love but one I dislike A LOT is "Finger lickin' goodness" makes me cringe!

Happy Monday!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jen - you're right! That one makes me shudder as well :)

I think it'll take me a bit to catch up on all the WriteOnCon amazingness - but it's well worth the time :)

Beth Zimmerman said...

Great name for a tennis tournament! :) I'm glad you had fun!

Jemi Fraser said...

Tamika - we did had a great time! :)

Sorry to hear your pregnancy is causing some troubles. I was one of the lucky ones - I loved being pregnant, felt great the whole time. Hope it gets better/easier soon. Good luck and take care :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Beth - I thought it was awesome too. We had an absolute blast! :)

Lisa Gail Green said...

And ... back to work we go :)

Together We Save said...

Great slogan... my daughter is dying for a Kindle.... but we are still holding out!

Jemi Fraser said...

Together We Save - I love the slogan too :)

I'm enjoying my Kindle - and would highly recommend it if you're doing a lot of travelling or commuting. But I don't blame you for holding out - it took me years to get one for myself :)

Dawn Simon said...

Sometimes it's great to get away from the computer, isn't it? Nice that you are enjoying your Kindle. I hope to get one, eventually.

I like Nike's "Just do it."

Have a wonderful week!

That is a great slogan.

Talli Roland said...

Argh, Blogger just ate my comment!

That's a fantastic slogan! Glad you had fun in TO!

Jemi Fraser said...

Dawn - that's so true - a change is as good as a rest!

Just do it is a great slogan! I've used it in my classroom so many times! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Holly - I love it too. It made me pause, think & smile - always good!

Jemi Fraser said...

Talli - Blogger has been picking on my a bit today and yesterday as well! I wonder what's up - we're nice people! :)

TO was awesome - as a former Canuck I bet you even say it correctly in long form too! :)

Eric W. Trant said...

We drove from Dallas to North Carolina to Dallas last week. 40 hours on the road.

Mostly I drove, since my wife's preggers, and because I'm a manly-man who doesn't like his girl to do the hard work, like mowing or fixing stuff or driving 40 hours from Dallas to NC to Dallas again.

Man, it sure puts into perspective how big Texas is (and the western states in general). Those eastern states are almost embarrassing they're so small. Most of their mile markers don't even get up to 200miles, much less the 600s and 800s like they do in Texas.

I crossed states in less time than it takes me to get to Austin. Heck, less time than it takes me to get to Waco!

Anyway, I didn't do much reading, nor did my wife. We talked and listened to the news on the satellite radio and talked about the news and she kept telling me when the baby was rolling around inside her, Feel my belly right down here.

Glad you had fun at the tennis tourney and got some reading done. Beats the seemingly requisite Trip Fight, doesn't it!

- Eric

Jemi Fraser said...

Eric - lol :) It sure does beat the TF for sure!

Ontario is big too, but I think Texas is quite a bit bigger. It makes for some long drives I bet!

It's so exciting to have a baby coming. There's nothing in the world like feeling that baby move inside. I knew I had 2 athletes on my hands before they were even born! Enjoy those lovely moments!

NENSA MOON said...

sound you have a wonderful trip...
I bet you have a great time enjoying the tournament even without internet...haven't you?!

hugs, nensa

Jemi Fraser said...

Nensa - it was fantastic! I did enjoy it so much - and you're right - I didn't miss the Internet much at all :)

Walter Knight said...

Kindle books are the savior of small publishing companies because many people now only shop online with their Kindle. Some even brouse at Barnes & Noble, then go home and buy a kindle book.

Am I wrong?

Jemi Fraser said...

Walter - I don't actually know too many people in my city (small one in Northern Ontario) who own an ereader of any kind. But more and more people I know online are buying them and a lot of people are using them for most or all of their reading. So, nope, I don't think you're wrong :)

Susan Fields said...

I love the "Love Means Nothing" slogan - I can't remember any others as clever, though some are catchy and get stuck in my head ("I wanna be a Toys 'R Us Kid," "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.") I'm glad you had such a wonderful time at the tournament!

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - I love the Toys R Us song! Actually I love the Nut one too - never liked the candy bars, but I sang the song a lot :)

Thanks - it was a ton of fun :)

Elliot Grace said...

...gotta get me one of those readers!
(only been saying that for two years now:)

Jemi Fraser said...

Elliot - lol :) I know the feeling! And if it wasn't for my family chipping in for my bday, I'd still be saying it too!
