Steampunk Haiku???

Stephanie Thornton over at Hatshepsut: The Writing of a Novel is hosting a Haiku blogfest. Here's her description of the event:

I know a lot of you like blogfests, but don't have time to write a 500 word piece or you don't want to post excerpts from your WIP. I feel your pain. Some of you like to write poetry, but like me, you don't think you're very good at it. But haikus are a piece of cake, just three lines with 5, 7, and 5 moras respectively. Easy peasy!

"Easy peasy," she says. Ha!

I've written and taught my fair share of poetry over the years. I enjoy poetry. I even have favourite poets -- Margaret Atwood, Dennis Lee, Shel Silverstein, Robert Frost. Three of those poets write rhyming poetry - 2 write silly, fun rhyming poetry. One writes thought-provoking free verse ranging from serious to bizarre.

None of them write haiku. I've never taught the haiku form of poetry. I've never written a haiku.

But Stephanie's a sweetie and she was very convincing. So I clicked on the linky thingy. And proceeded to forget about it. Until now. After much fiddling I've created 3 that represent my book & the characters. Duck out now if you like - I'll never tell :)

So after all that rambling and avoiding and procrastinating, here are my haiku...

***

Orphaned and alone
Searching the streets for answers
Finding them and worse

***

Nico's mentor's dead
Killers still want what he made
He won't let them win

***

In Steampunk England
Tinkerings to assist them
Looking for killers

***
None of them give the exact feel of the book, but each of them highlights a small part. Not quite what I was hoping for, but at least I didn't come up blank!

So how are your haiku skills? Do you write them? Any haiku horror stories from the past to share?? :)

Don't forget to click on Stephanie's link to visit all of the other entries!

Haikus can be fun. Yours are good and I like the way they create the mood of your book.

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Holly. I don't stick well to patterns - I tend to work outside the box much better than inside the box, but I'm okay with these :)

Natasha said...

There was a time when I was very young (and that is an excuse) when I thought I could do haikus. I no longer suffer from that delusion.

Natasha said...

Geez, look at me answering your question without telling you that your haikus created the same mood in me as the painting you chose- which must be the mark of a good haiku.

Jemi Fraser said...

Rayna - awww thanks. I know they're not great, but if they create the mood, I'm happy :)

RHYTHM AND RHYME said...

These are Great Jemi, I am no good at them at all.

Enjoy your week-end.
Yvonne.

Talli Roland said...

I'm impressed, Jemi! I'm rubbish at haikus; much better at free verse.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Good for you! I'm not a poet and would create a terrible haikus.

Jemi Fraser said...

Yvonne - thanks! And I don't believe you for a second. With your poetry skills, you'd make some great one :)

Summer Ross said...

the first one is really good. I don't write them but I have read a bit about them. I didn't participate in the fest, but you did well.

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Talli - I prefer free verse as well - the words just flow better for me. Although it's been a long while since I've written poetry of any kind. Gotta fix that.

Jemi Fraser said...

Diane - thanks! I doubt it though - you have a lovely way with words :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Summer - I signed up in a moment of lunacy and then realized I'd actually have to follow through! Yikes!

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Hi Jemi. First, big points for bravery. Trying new stuff is what makes life fun. I think your poems fit the tone of that picture you chose and give a moody, dark feeling for the book. Nice job.

Jan Morrison said...

I love haikus and think yours are grand! I like being forced to a form from time to time. Let's all try sonnets! OK - later...

Mason Canyon said...

I think your haikus is great. I don't think I could do one line much less three.

Jemi Fraser said...

Tricia - thanks! I've decided to be braver in the new year (I tend to count by school years :)) and this is the result! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Jan - Dear heavens! Sonnets!!! You're trying to send me right over the edge!

Thanks :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Mason - thanks! I'm trying to get a little braver in my world - and taking risks is a good thing... right? :)

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Haiku is fun. I love reading them and even creating them. Steampunk haiku must be your original invention.

Summer Frey said...

I love haiku. Usually use them for comedic effect, but they can be beautiful, too.

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - thanks! It was fun to give it a try - I had to keep checking on my fingers to see if my syllables were right! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Summer - none of mine will be beautiful, but I have seen some amazing ones already. Some poets create such imagery in such a short space. :)

Amalia Dillin said...

I love that you put three together to encapsulate your book! And I really like the line "Tinkerings to assist them" which really reflects the steampunk element. Nicely done!

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Oh, I hadn't heard this news yet. Thanks, Jemi! :-)

A said...

Steampunk haiku -- Jemi, you never fail to amaze me :-)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Amalia - I had to use 3 because I couldn't do it in 1!! I can't believe how many can do it - yourself included :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Poetry of any kind is not my talent.

Jemi Fraser said...

Shannon - any time! Stephanie's a sweetie but this was a little beyond my talents :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Agnes - You never quite know what you're going to get when you drop by! This is my weird and wonderful world! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Alex - I know how you feel! I enjoy poetry, but writing it is NOT my forte and I've never shared before :)

VR Barkowski said...

Outstanding! So Awesome you were able to capture moments in your book, and the haiku work beautifully with the painting. Great atmosphere.

I have no haiku skills, but it was fun to give them a try… once. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

VR - thanks! I'm surprised it even worked a little bit to be completely honest :)

I'll pop on over and check yours out as soon as I'm a computer when I can do that!

Lola Sharp said...

That first one is POWERFUL and haunting...so good.

I hope your weekend
is relaxing and lovely
know you are adored

Love,
Lola

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Lola!! :)

You're so awesome - that one would have taken me forever to create!! And thank you :)

Franklin Beaumont said...

Great idea, to use haiku to highlight different aspects of your book. You think an agent would accept a query letter in haiku form?

Jemi Fraser said...

Franklin - what a terrifying idea! Although it probably can't be any more difficult than writing a query, can it? :)

Thanks for dropping by!

Patti Lacy said...

Jemi, I am AWFUL at haikus and all poetry but would LOVE to take a class..

Blessings,
Patti

Jemi Fraser said...

Patti - I enjoy poetry - but don't write much of it - and obviously don't do haiku a lot! :)

Just Another Sarah said...

I like the first one! Nice mood is set in it!

Just Another Sarah said...

Wait--I mean, I like *all* of them, but specifically the first one. :)

Roland D. Yeomans said...

I really liked the first one. It is hard to attempt a written form that you have no experience in tackling.

You did a great job, Roland

Jemi Fraser said...

Just Another Sarah - lol :)

Thanks! I haven't made it all the way through the entries yet, I'll get to yours soon!

Jemi Fraser said...

Roland - thanks! It's fun trying something new - but putting it on show is another story :)

M. Bail said...

Nicely done! I agree with Amalia, I like that line "tinkerings to assist them." And the picture works well with all of them.

Jemi Fraser said...

M. Bail - thanks so much :)

I appreciate your comment - this was more stressful than I'd care to admit!

I like how your haiku represent your book, and I enjoyed them!

The first one in particular spoke to me. Finding the answers is not always a good thing...

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Great job, Jemi! I think haiku are really challenging to write.

Paula RC said...

What a great way to sum up your book. I shall have a go at doing mine.

Jemi Fraser said...

Amanda - thanks! Yes - answers aren't always what you think they're going to be. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Elizabeth! I think they are too! Some of the ones in the blogfest are so lyrical - almost magic what some poets can do with so few words. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Jarmara - it's fun! I know mine aren't deep or especially good, but they were fun to write. :)

Viridian Green said...

I think you are being overly modest :) Your haiku conjure up image and atmosphere - loved the first one especially, very well done!

Like you, I signed up for the fest and then happily forgot about it...

Jemi Fraser said...

Viridian - thank you! I'm so glad they aren't as weak as I worried they might be :)

Nothing quite like that panic attack when you see someone's blog post announcing the blogfest you've completely forgotten about!! :)

Thanks for dropping by.

Rosalind Adam said...

That's brilliant, Jemi. I love haikus. I especially love the tightness of their structure... and their manageable length.

Jemi Fraser said...

Rosalind - awww - thanks :)

I'm always a little afraid of things that trap me into a structure - I'm more a free verse kind of gal. But this was fun!

Wendy Tyler Ryan said...

Dark, funky and cool. New take on a haiku.

Jemi Fraser said...

Wendy - Thanks! :) I'm pleased I was able to come up with anything at all!

Angie Ledbetter said...

Dropping in from the bbq for a few Tums tablets. LOL. Since I've been following ya on Twitter for a while, it's nice to be able to "meet"/follow here too.

Have a great weekend.

Jemi Fraser said...

Angie - good idea! I'll do the same :)

Hope you're feeling better and have a good weekend!

Karen Strong said...

That's some good haiku skills you have there Jemi!

And I love Lola's haiku. Ha, you ARE adored! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Karen :) I was a little terrified to post, but I'm working on getting braver!

You're such a sweetie - and Lola is too! Thanks so much!! :)

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Love the steampunk haiku!!!
I'm terrible at Haiku

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynda - thanks :)

It was a challenge - I've never written one before - but it was fun! :)

Arlee Bird said...

Well at the risk of being pelted with sushi and sashimi I'm going to be honest and say I'm not a fan of haikus. I just never really got it. I've read some that were kind of nice, but I don't go out of my way to look for them. Perhaps I should try composing some myself someday to gain a better appreciation for the art form.
That being said, yours were a noble effort.
Now let me duck this bowl of noodles coming my way.

Lee
Tossing It Out

Jemi Fraser said...

Arlee - lol :) No sushi or sashimi!

Each to their own. I don't do a lot of haiku writing myself ... actually only these 3 ever. But it was a fun challenge and I actually enjoyed trying it!

I'm always thankful that we all like different things and do different things. Can you imagine how incredibly dull life would be if we all liked the same? So go on with your haiku apathy - I'll support your right! :)

Janet said...

I write a little poetry and have tried haiku a few times. I write children's stories, so my favorite poetry is rhyming.

Jemi Fraser said...

Janet - there are so many good rhyming poets for kids. My kids loved Dennis Lee - their favourite book was Jelly Belly. It's been years and we can all still quote from it :)

Stephanie Thornton said...

I really like that last one- it has me totally intrigued about your book (as if I wasn't already!).

And I know what you mean about writing haikus- I've never been good at them, but I feel like they're a somewhat manageable form of poetry. If I keep my expectations for myself nice and low, that is! :)

Happy weekend!

Jemi Fraser said...

Stephanie - thanks :)

I agree - the haiku isn't nearly as intimidating as some other forms. I enjoyed the challenge.

Congrats on the blogfest - there were tons of great poems! Great job!

Rebecca Gomez said...

Great haikus! I considered writing one about one of my characters, but wrote about vacation instead. Maybe I'll try a character one today.

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Rebecca!

Vacation is always good - whether we're experiencing it or writing about it! :)

Nate Wilson said...

Wonderful haiku! It's hard to condense the essence of a novel into 17 little syllables (I know my own attempt fell far short), but each of yours provide just enough flavor of the tale to intrigue me to read more. Well done!

Jemi Fraser said...

Nate - Thank you!

It is hard - even worse than a query! :) I'm glad it came out okay! :)

Helen Ginger said...

I've written a few, back in my college English Lit days, but nothing worth remembering or repeating. I think you did quite well!

Janet Johnson said...

I'm terrible at poetry. Haikus included. But I thought yours were good! It's a fun concept . . . to capture your book on a Haiku.

Jemi Fraser said...

Helen - thanks - I really was nervous to post them!

I'm an English major and I took a few extra English classes in high school, but never wrote a haiku. Odd.

Jemi Fraser said...

Janet - lol :)

It was fun. Not my usual thing, but it was fun to try. I'm forcing myself to take more risks this year!

RaShelle Workman said...

Jemi - These were great! My editor is a steampunk lover. She'd get a kick out of these.

Jemi Fraser said...

RaShelle - thank you :)

I love steampunk - it's such a great world - so many possibilities!

Old Kitty said...

Here from KarenG's
Love your wonderful haikus
Enjoy your weekend!

:-)

Take care
x

Jemi Fraser said...

Old Kitty - thanks so much!

I've met quite a few new friends from Karen's - she's got so many great ideas!

Have a great weekend :)

Laura Pauling said...

Those were great haikus! They'd be fun to try. I just might have to.

Jemi Fraser said...

Laura - Thank you!

It was fun to try - I wasn't too sure at first, but you kind of find a rhythm and then you're off!

Mari said...

Nice! Great idea to write haiku about your book. I'm even more curious now, heh. I also love the picture you chose!

As for my poor efforts of poetry writing, they usually have no rhyme, so nope, no haiku for me, thanks. I go for free verses, when I dare that is. :p

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Mari! I'm glad they worked pretty well.

Free verse is fun - I like it as well. Although I've been known to write a few satires based on Twas the Night Before Christmas :)

Sharon K. Mayhew said...

Very nice!

My daughter writes great Haikus...I've never tried...

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Sharon. I've never tried until now either! I know lots of people love them though. Looks like your daughter is going to be a writer as well! :)

Dawn Simon said...

Good job! And intriguing. I bet your book is great!

Lua said...

I really like Haikus- they can be very striking! And you did a great job :) I wish I had the talent to write them…

Jemi Fraser said...

Dawn - thanks!

I'm hoping it is :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Lua - thank you! They are fun to try - and I found I got into a kind of rhythm after a few tries. :)

Glynis Peters said...

Not a fan...only because I struggle with them. I enjoyed yours.

Shelley Sly said...

Wow, I like this! Yours turned out great! I'm pretty awful at any kind of poetry, but since haikus have a formula, that might be one that I can somewhat pull off. I'll tinker around with it. Thanks for sharing!

Jemi Fraser said...

Glynis - I responded to your comment earlier, but it seems to have disappeared...

I understand what you mean - I struggled too! I'm glad they turned out okay :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Shelley - Thanks! :)

Haikus are fun - but I'd never tried one before. Once I got going I got in a bit of a rhythm so it got a little easier. Have fun!

Unknown said...

Great job!! I love to write Haiku -- although I'm really not very good at it :D

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Nicole :)

I can see me teaching these at school in the coming year now - something I've never done. Because of the tight form I think the kids would have fun with it!

Hannah said...

oooh, I love your Haiku. I have never written a haiku or attempted to write one. Maybe one day. I love reading them though.

Jemi Fraser said...

Hannah - thanks! This was my first too - they are more fun than I expected. You kind of get into a rhythm with them :)
