Top Ten TV Shows Blogfest

Alex Cavanaugh is doing it again! The Dirty Dozen Movie Blogfest was such a hit, he's hosting one now for Top Ten TV Shows. Again I couldn't resist. There are so many great TV shows I've enjoyed over the years. Top Ten though is HARD! After (not so) much internal debate, here we go...

11. My bonus pick. Okay it's not in the rules but I needed at least 1 more pic! Bablyon 5 was another close one, but for my bonus pic I'll go with Sliders - so many fun alternate dimensions.

10. Stargate Atlantis/SG1 - Love the gate! Love the blend of characters & emotions on these shows - so much great humour! And who doesn't love a good wraith or replicator?

9. X-Files. I didn't catch this show the first time around. I thought it would be too scary because I am a bit of a wimp. I have nightmares pretty much every night anyway, I didn't want to make them worse. But Scully & Mulder drew me in. There are so many great concepts in this show - so many possibilities. Love it!

8. American Idol & Canadian Idol. Yeah, I know - doesn't really match the rest of the shows on the list. But I love music - always have. I can't handle the audition rounds very well, but I love the Hollywood section where they have to work in groups. I love harmonies and when these kids do them well, it's amazing! :)
7. Bones - I'd read several of Kathy Reichs books and fallen in love with her characters Tempe and Ryan well before the TV show started. I like how the books and show have gone in slightly different directions but stay true to each other. Having the author involved probably makes that a little easier. :)
6. Star Trek: The Original Series. This series had to go on the list because it's the series that I think inspired me to write. One day I stumbled across the show in reruns. No one in my family enjoyed any kind of science fiction or fantasy so this was my first exposure. I got sucked in immediately. Loved Spock! Fascinating. :) I spent hours, usually at night when I should have been sleeping, creating scripts in my head. I kept at it until the settings, dialogue and blocking were all how I'd want them. I never wrote them down, but I probably created dozens of scripts over the years.

5. Star Trek TNG - The Next Generation really caught my imagination too. The cast was more modern and I thought the Data character was brilliant. Casting a comedian as a straight-faced, 'non'-emotional android was so smart!
4. Fringe - Fringe Science is so much fun. More alternate universes - more weird science and endless possibilities! Walter is awesome :)

3. Torchwood - Wow! Awesome. Dark, flawed, complex characters with all kinds of troubles and issues trying to keep the world safe. Fantastic.

2. Battlestar Gallactica. This remake was SO different from the original. Starbuck's a girl! I love the characters and the whole Cylon concept. Slave races will never be content to remain slaves forever.

1. Firefly - I actually didn't catch this when it was on TV either. Joss Whedon is a master. This show is set in the future in space, but it's more like the Wild West frontier. Okay, that sounds cheesy. It's actually brilliant and well worth a watch!

So, there you go. Definitely skewed towards the sci-fi end of the realm. Gotta thank my science-fiction-hating family for that one. We only had one TV for most of my growing up years, but I always got to watch Star Trek - although everyone else always found things they wanted to do elsewhere. It was great!

Thanks Alex! Make sure you check out his site :) (I've got meetings after school today - but I'll try to get around to a lot of the posts in the evening!)

So, what's your #1, absolute favourite TV series of all-time?

Excellent picks, Jemi! You sci-fi geek, you! Fringe almost made my list, but there was just too many. And I had a bonus pick as well.
Thanks for participating - knew your list would be awesome!

Your list is the best. Bones is a wonderful show and I've just found Firefly on Hulu. I think X Files is a winner with almost everyone.

Excellent list, i'd be surprised if Firefly WASN'T on the list.

Great list! Stargate seems to be gracing a lot of lists today!

Carolyn Abiad said...

I loved the Stargate movie, but never got into the series. Wonder why...maybe two small kids running around had something to do with it.

Hart Johnson said...

Great list! I will have to check out a few of these. Your descriptions of Bones and Torchwood both really appeal to me.

Gregg Metcalf said...

I forgot about Bones - what a great show. Interesting list, looks sci fi. I haven't seen any of the other nine.

Take my love, take my land... :D

Hmm, think I may have to do a top ten now. ;-)

I can't believe that B5 didn't make the top ten.

I'm not surprised to find many of my favorites on your list. :)

Firefly was brilliant!

"The man they called Jayne!"

Theresa Milstein said...

A lot of sci-fi!

One of my favorite shows was "Arrested Development". It was so clever and funny, and never jumped the shark.

Mara Nash said...

We clearly have a lot in common where TV is concerned. And oh! I totally forgot Torchwood! And Dr. Who! LOVE those two!! Can I do a top 15?!

Kristi said...

I love reading everyone's list! I love Fringe and can't wait for it to return!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer HAS to be my all-time favorite television series. Yes, I said it. I love cheese. ;-)

Tamika: said...

This is too fun!

I'm an old sitcom junkie:) My favorite series of all time...The Golden Girls!

I have every season on DVD, and I'm so glad they rerun every night of the week.

Jennifer Shirk said...

I LOVED the X-files! I came in late to the show too and would rent the DVDs so I could catch-up.

I'm a The Simpson's fan too.

Summer Ross said...

I love this- LOL I totally spaced x-files i used to watch that when i was younger.

Michelle Gregory said...

great to see Star Trek on the list.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Woo-Hoo XFiles! I so wanted Mulder & Scully to get together. Almost listed Battlestar, but the second half sagged too much for me. Good picks, Jemi!

Karen Strong said...

Hmm...I really LOVED the X-Files. But maybe because it's still fresh in my mind, I would have to say LOST.

But I love your list! You have a lot of shows in common with me.

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Love your list, Jemi. I'm crazy for Joss Whedon so Buffy is my all-time fav, but I loved Firefly, too. And I was captivated by Torchwood--I'm still waiting for an end!

I have Fringe in my Honorable Mention. Sliders was cool too. We have similar tastes as I like the shows you have. Great list.

I've watched "American Idol" faithfully for the last 5 seasons, but I probably wouldn't put it in my top 10-- but it is pretty entertaining.
Great list here--haven't seen a lot of them-- but I like the science fiction leanings.
Probably my all time favorites are "Twilight Zone" and "Quantum Leap".

I'm too old -- too many shows to remember. If I only go back to college days, my list would have to include Star Trek, The Man from UNCLE, and Batman. Now, we watch The Closer, NCIS, CSI and Castle, but I'm not sure those would make my top 10 list. What about MacGyver, and Simon & Simon and one of my all-time favorites, Magnum, PI.

One category that won't ever make my list are the reality shows. OK, I like Next Food Network Star, Top Chef, and Holmes on Homes...but none of the current Big Ones.

OK -- back to work. Great trip down memory lane.

VR Barkowski said...

I stopped watching TV several years ago once everything started coming out on dvd (without commercials), but at least I recognize most of these shows! Sliders was fun, I'm still enjoying Torchwood, and for some reason TNG never gets old.

Lisa Gail Green said...

Love your list! I'm a big Sci-fi nut too. Never heard of Torchwood though, I'll have to check that one out!

Jessica Bell said...

Yay for Bones!!! I can't decide between Bones, Lost or Grey's anatomy ...

Yeah Bones is a good one! Missed that on my list:(

I started to get hooked on Torchwood because it was right before my favourite TV show, Supernatural on Space TV. Are they still making it? You're the only other person I know who ever has seen it!! Great list.

Anonymous said...

Excellent list (even though I've never seen most of them). :) Favorite shows for me were Friends, Family Guy and House. The last season or two of House has left me quite uninterested, however, and Family Guy is off to a not so stellar beginning. I do, however, think I'm becoming a Gleek. :D

BryStearns said...

Firefly! Love that show. Glad to see so many Sci Fi shows on there. BSG didn't make my list though. I'm trying to start season 4, but I was underwhelmed by season 3.

First one for Bones I've seen around town!!! Love Bones!! A ton of X-files, guess you can tell it's a favorite!!! Too cool! Great list!

I'm not much of a TV watcher, which is why I didn't enter the blogfest. But I do really love Mad Men and I would be quite surprised if I found a better TV show than that. It can get depressing but it's beautifully done. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Emily - Stargate is a great one! I like SG-1 as well. That's another one I didn't catch 1st time around :)

Carolyn - I actually enjoyed the series even more than the movie. And the 2 kids DEFINITELY have something to do with missing a lot of TV :)

Hart - Thanks! Bones is a lot of fun - great characters. And Torchwood is dark and fascinating - great British series :)

Gregg - it definitely is mostly sci-fi. LOVE pretty much all spec fiction. Bones is really good! :)

Michelle - yay! Another Star Trek fan! It sure opened up worlds for me!

Jemi Fraser said...

Diane - I'm not surprised we have some of the same interests! BSG did have a weaker ending too - but I still enjoyed it!

Karen - I enjoyed the first few seasons of Lost, but it lost its lustre for me - and the ending was so disappointing.

Tricia - I haven't seen Buffy - but it's on my wishlist for Christmas :) They really need to get back to Torchwood - I don't like to be left hanging!

Stephen - thanks! I felt the same when I read your list - still can't believe I didn't even think about MASH!

Terry - I LOVED Magnum & Simon & Simon. Those were such fun shows! Great characters!

Lisa - Torchwood is awesome! It's a British show and the humour is so dark - you'll love it!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jessica - I enjoyed most of Lost, but the last few seasons didn't fly as well for me. And the ending was disappointing for me.

Ellie - go ahead - sneak in a bonus pick, I'll never tell! Star Trek really is amazing - brilliant stuff :)

Aspiring X - I'm not surprised - that commercial was CREEPY! Such imagination in that show!

Jennie - Firefly is awesome! But it's been out of circulation for a while so I'm not surprised it gets forgotten sometimes :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Candyland - I do like Bones - the characters are wonderful - and they play off each other very well.

Lynn - Torchwood left me hanging. It said it was over, but there's no way they can just end it the way they did. I hope they make more!

Kimberly - I love Friends too! I've never seen Family Guy or House. I've seen a few episodes of Glee and I laughed all the way through!

Bry - I agree BSG definitely was stronger at the beginning, but I still enjoyed the twists and turns! Firefly is indeed magic!

Firefly is such a winner. Why, oh why, did they cancel it?

Jemi Fraser said...

Eliza - if you like the other sci-fi shows, you'll probably love Firefly. Smart writing, fun plots and great acting :)

Elizabeth - X-Files sure seems to be quite universal. It seems to have reached more than just sci-fi fans too!

Terry - X-Files again - so many people enjoyed it! I haven't seen Mad Men - I've been trying to avoid adding more shows I like, but this one has a lot of fans!

Lindsay - I miss Sliders too - I'm going to have to see if it's out on DVD - it must be!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jules - Kathy Reichs is such a multi-talented lady! I was so excited when the TV show started based on her books :)

Karen - Sliders was such fun! Loved the alternate dimensions - so much imagination went into that show!

Adam - That's such great news! There can never be too much Torchwood! thanks :)

Lynda - I know! I can't believe I missed the original run. I wonder if they advertised enough - it's SUCH a great show!

Jemi Fraser said...

Ellie - thanks! Fringe is fabulous! I have to pick up the Sliders DVDs one day - I'd love to watch them again :)

Julie - not at all! I'm the only one in my family who watches it. They all think I'm the nut! Seinfeld is a riot though :)

WN - X-Files is great. Sometimes it's like that - so many good ones, it blocks my brain :)

Kelly Polark said...

Fun picks!
David Duchovny looks so young in that X Files photo!!

Jemi Fraser said...

Kelly - thanks! I know! I had to choose that one when I looked up the images :)

I enjoying all the FIREFLY love I've been seeing today! And I love FRINGE as well, its just too new for me to make it one of my favorites just yet. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

DL - I thought about it being so new too, but I so look forward to the next episode! Walter is such a great character ... and they've got Nimoy!

Angela McCallister said...

Ugh! I could not name a favorite at all. I've read about Firefly and have seen it on a lot of lists. I'll have to check it out. Too bad it only ran a short time! I've not heard of Fringe, but it looks and sounds like something I'd watch. Guess I got some catching up to do ;)

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

You have some of my very favorites. Stargate Atlantis, Bones and I would add Supernatural. On my blog yesterday I talked about having Firefly as my background inspiration while I was writing. I loved that show and the follow up movie.

Jemi Fraser said...

Angela - Firefly is wonderful! So is Fringe. They have such amazing writers working for them. Great shows!

Susan - I love Atlantis & Bones. I keep hearing about Supernatural but I haven't seen it yet. I'm going to have to check it out soon! Firefly is such an inspiration in so many ways! :)

Hannah said...

If I just did a SciFi list, BSG would def be on my list. Great show!

And check out Supernatural!! It is so so worth it.

Jemi Fraser said...

Hannah - I'll definitely have to check out Supernatural - so many people I respect enjoy it! Thanks :)

Ishta Mercurio said...

Jemi Fraser said...

Ishta - I know how you feel! I've come across a few I can't believe I forgot about (MacGyver, MASH, Quantum Leap...) There are so many good ones! :)

Lola Sharp said...

I still mourn the loss of Firefly (but I like Castle, so it's not a total loss)
I also loved X_Files and the original Star Trek.

My favorites (w/out HBO series being included) will always be Gilmore Girls and Arrested Development. Still mourning their loss, too. :(

Love your list. :)
Love,
Lola

Jemi Fraser said...

Lola - I love Castle as well. I laughed when he put on the Mal costume! :)

I haven't seen either Gilmore Girls (my daughter enjoys it!) or Arrested Development yet. I'll have to fix that!

RaShelle Workman said...

Hi Jemi - Love Bones too. Started watching it because I was an Angel fan. It really is a great show. =D

DL Curran said...

You've a great list here! I so forgot about Sliders, yet it was so good! Loved that one. And I can't believe I forgot about Battlestar Galactica... I really need to do my list again ~shakes head~ Nice to meet you. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

RaShelle - I really like Bones too - such great characters. I never did watch Angel but it's another one I think I would have liked!

Jemi Fraser said...

DL - Thank you! I loved Sliders - I want to pick up the DVD versions. LOVE BSG :) I can't believe the fabulous shows I forgot too. It's so hard. Glad to meet you!

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Oh, Star Trek (both) and BSG would definitely make my list, along with Dr. Who and Boston Legal. :-)

Jemi Fraser said...

Shannon - I really like Dr. Who as well - I just started watching it this year & it's great. I never have seen Boston Legal yet. One of these days... :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Kelley - Thanks! I know the feeling. There are a few I want to buy the DVDs now because I've seen them on so many lists! :)

Kelley said...

same i may have to write them down so i remember :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Kelley - I did the same thing! I made a wishlist of DVDs for my family for Xmas! :)

Unknown said...

I agree with sooo many of your choices! The only one that wouldn't have made it onto my short list is FRINGE.

Jemi Fraser said...

Elaine - We obviously have pretty similar tastes! I do love sci fi! I'm enjoying Fringe - can't wait to see what happens to Olivia :)

Beth Zimmerman said...

I think I must be the only person on earth who has never seen Firefly. (Or maybe just in my circle of online friends!) I have at least HEARD of it but that's only because Charm City Cakes (Ace of Cakes on FOOD Network) made a Firefly themed cake last season. Just to show how truly pathetic I am ... I also have them as my reference for another (I hear) cult classic ... The Big Labewski! Scary, huh!

Jemi Fraser said...

Beth - I only found Firefly because my brother-in-law told me I HAD to watch it. He's the only other sci-fi nut in my entire extended family :)

I'll have to check out that Ace of Cakes episode - that would be awesome!!

CATE said...

You TREKKIE, you!! No surprise. I loved Stargate too :)

Online Discovery Channel said...

I like your list and the choice of TV shows and i love to watch stargate and American idol.

Cate - I admit it - total Trekkie here! Stargate is lot of fun! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

ODC - thanks! Stargate and Idol are lots of fun! There are so many great shows out there! :)

Helen Ginger said...

Some on your list I've never heard of, but of the ones I do know about, I like them. I'm trying to think of a series I've been totally addicted to and the only thing I can think of is a very old soap opera called Dark Shadows. I watched it all summer, then school started back up and it went by the wayside.

Susan Kaye Quinn said...

Your picks are AWESOME! I'm still waiting to dive into Fringe, but I've heard it's so so good.

It's hard to pick a fav, because it all depends on when I was watching, but X-files is up there.

Carolina M. Valdez Schneider said...

Sadly, I don't really know! I don't watch much TV, but I think I'd like Fringe if I did.

TK Richardson said...

This is a great list, Jemi. It is too hard for me to choose!

Shelley Sly said...

I looooove Firefly! What a great show. So sad that it was so short. I'm a Nathan Fillion fan in general, and I love him in Castle, too.

Kimberly Franklin said...

Oh, Fringe. I love that show!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Helen :) There are a few series that only show up on our Space Channel (at least in my area of Canada) so I'm not surprised you've never heard of them!

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - I agree - it's so hard to pick one favourite - so many things influence me. If you like the others on my list, you'll probably love Fringe!

Jemi Fraser said...

Carol - I usually have the TV on in the background - although my kids always laugh at my multi-tasking because I always have the laptop with me too :)

Jemi Fraser said...

TK - Thanks! I'm surprised how many people have said they enjoy the sci-fi! It was tough to choose favourites :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Shelley - Fillion is awesome! I enjoy as Castle as well - such a fun show! It's so sad Firefly was so short!

Jemi Fraser said...

Kimberly - Fringe is fabulous! I'm so excited to see the 'other' Walter is up to!

TerryLynnJohnson said...

this has been fun checking out others in the blogfest. We only get one channel here, and that's what I had growing up as well. But I did LOVE XFiles. North of 60 too, but maybe because that's all I got? All time fav? LOST.

Jemi Fraser said...

Terry - it was a fun blogfest wasn't it? X-Files is such fun! I enjoyed the first few seasons of Lost, but it lost its lustre for me in the last 2 seasons. Not really sure why.

Elizabeth Mueller said...

Ooh, what a fun fest! Too bad I missed this one. I'll be sure to make up for all my time lost! I love star trek. It's cute to see stargate here, my kids are nuts over that, it's so funny. <3

Jemi Fraser said...

Elizabeth - it really was a lot of fun! So many great shows to think about :)

I love most things sci-fi. Wish someone else in my family did. None do!

Shannon said...

Excellent list! Sorry I missed this fest.

Patricia Stoltey said...

I think the only one I watch on your list is American Idol. Wonder how it's going to be with the new judges.

Patricia

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Shannon - there were a ton of great lists out there - so many fun shows!

Jemi Fraser said...

Patricia - lol :) Obviously you're not a sci-fi nut!!

Idol is so much fun - hope it still works with the new judges!

Alix said...

Oh I love Firefly. I wish they'd had more seasons. I think Buffy, Lost and Battestar Gallactica are my favorite shows and Arrested Development for comedy.

Fun post :-)

Patti Lacy said...

Oh, MYYYYY! Talk about a following!!!
Whew.

I am SO dating myself. Um, Leave it to Beaver. The Cosbys.

The only ones I watch now (as I exercise) are Law & Order and The Closer. LOVE the writing and scene change. SO helpful to writerly types...

Sigh. Speaking of writing, I'm being shoved into the writers cave until 11/15 or I pound out a rough draft of my Lily. Sure hope you can stop by and connect me with your GREAT place. I will SO miss you!!!

Patti

Jemi Fraser said...

Alexa - I've got Buffy on my wishlist but haven't got it yet! Gotta pick it up! I keep hearing about Arrested Development, but I'd never heard of it before this blogfest. I'll have to check it out :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Patti - lol :)

I actually haven't seen either L&O or Closer. Enjoy the cave! I hope the drafting goes well! :)

Margo Berendsen said...

The Star Trek series (pretty much all of them) remain my lasting favorites. Firefly was pretty good, too. I haven't see BattleStar yet but you're one of several who listed it, so I must try it!

Jemi Fraser said...

Margo - I love all the Star Treks too. I can always watch the reruns! BSG is really good - although the first half of the series is stronger than the latter half ... at least in my opinion. :)

Victoria Dixon said...

Holy Smokies! 126 comments! You've left out several of my faves, so I'll speak up for them:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Deep Space Nine (yes, I'm one of the few, but the writing was brilliant)
and my longest T.V. love ever: Doctor Who. David Tennant rocked, but so did Eccleston, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, John Pertwee and Patrick Troughton and lets be honest, I'd include the others if I'd seen enough episodes! LOL

Jemi Fraser said...

Victoria - I know! I have amazing friends :)

I haven't seen Buffy yet - but I'm hoping to get it for Xmas! I'm pretty sure I'll love it. I did like DS9, actually there isn't a Star Trek I didn't like!

I haven't seen enough Dr. Who episodes yet, but I really like what I've seen so far! :) Thanks for dropping by!

Connie Arnold said...

Great list, Jemi! I don't watch tv much but interested to know what others enjoy. Thanks for sharing!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Connie! :) As you can see I'm a bit of a science fiction nut. My favourite genre for TV :)

I've watched a few episodes of The X-Files, but I'm not familiar with the other shows. Yes, I've been living under a rock.

Medeia - lol :) I don't think my own family has heard of half of them! No one else here likes science fiction stuff, so don't feel bad! :)

X-Files - YES! Great, great show. Firefly sure was popular for a show that got cancelled so early - I'll definitely have to check it out. And I like Bones, too. :-)

I did this blogfest, too, but I was way down the list. I had Star Trek in my top ten.

Ishta - Love the X-Files & Firefly. Such awesome shows!

I didn't make it around to all of the posts, life just got in the way after a bit! :)
