Remakes Blogfest

Hosted by Alex J. Cavanaugh and Heather M. Gardner.

Remakes – most of them suck. Now and then, one comes along that is as good as, if not better, than the original. And after all of the bad ones we’ve endured, we want to know about some good ones.

On November 13, 2017, blog about your favorite remake: movie (or television show into movie and vice versa), song, or book – or all three! Post a YouTube video and links where we can find these treasures. Tell us why THIS remake doesn’t suck!

***

Here we go!

In general, I am not a fan of remakes. If I've loved the original, I tend to not want to take the chance or trying the remake, because the new one so very rarely lives up to the standard. I can think of very few exceptions...

One of my all-time favourite Remakes is Battlestar Galactica! The remake was different in so many ways from the original - and it was SO GOOD!

For songs, the remake of Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence by Disturbed is amazing. Beautiful, haunting, and oh so powerful.

How about you? Fans of BSG or Sound of Silence? Do you tend to love or hate remakes?

I haven't seen BSG yet, but I've heard good things about it! You've inspired me to listen to Disturbed. :) Very good!

Season three derailed a bit for me, but the Battlestar reboot was really good.
Nothing funnier than a rock or metal band redoing a super mellow song. Type O Negative redid Summer Breeze that would've made Seals and Croft roll over in their graves if they were dead.
Thanks for participating in the blogfest!

I really liked their Starbuck even though I loved Dirk Benedic in the original.

The one year, I taught The Sounds Of Silence to my primary school choir. The kids loved it, especially the boys. They were amazed to discover that the song is decades old.

Remakes of movies or songs I already know and love tend to annoy me.

There are so many remakes--and re-re-remakes--it's hard to keep track of them all and pick favorites. I'll have to think about it some more.

I only saw the second version, so I can't compare it to #1. Guess I chose the right one, heh?

My link didn't work on the Linky. I think it's because I screwed up the path with the switch to my new, cranky blog. www.cleemckenziebooks.com

I didn't know BSG was a remake. I've seen a few episodes, but never really sat down to get into it. Mostly because I needed to be writing and that wouldn't help.

Battlestar Galactica remakes was done well. Did not feel like the old one to me but something totally new which I enjoyed. I even watched the sequel which is really the prequel and enjoyed seeing how things started.

I didn't watch Battlestar while it was on, but I've heard good things about it. Maybe I can get the DVD's. :)
I love the Disturbed version of that song!!

Thank you for joining our blogfest today!!!

This is the one I would've picked. The new BSG was so amazing. Awesome acting and special effects. I think I could watch the whole thing over again.

I only watched the first season of BSG, but I enjoyed it more than the original. Nobody can sing Sounds of Silence like Simon & Garfunkel. Sorry.

It is - I love the passion in both versions of that one :)

Season 3 seems to be the Yuck season of SO MANY good shows! :)
I'm going to have to look that one up - sounds awesome!

Jemi Fraser said...

Me too! Loved the gender swap :)

Jemi Fraser said...

It's SUCH a powerful song - in all the versions I've heard. I've used it as poetry in class too - then showed them the song. It's so good :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Me too - but I loved these ones :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I know - and it seems the vast majority are not very good (especially in tv/movies)

Jemi Fraser said...

You did!
I bet that's the problem - but I found you :)

Jemi Fraser said...

LOL - it was a cheesy sci-fi show in the 70s (???). Loved it then - but the newer version was great!

Jemi Fraser said...

That's it exactly! BSG was a whole new show! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I love that version too - so haunting.
BSG is definitely worth a watch ... "so say we all"

Jemi Fraser said...

I have the DVD of the series - and I think I'll have to do that one day too :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I do love the S&G version of Silence as well - they both have such different ones - but they're both great :)

I hadn't heard the Disturbed version of Sounds of Silence. Definitely interesting and haunting. Remakes can go either way for me- sometimes I like them and sometimes not so much. :)

Yes to the BSG remake! I just finished a kicky retelling/remake of Much Ado About Nothing call SPEAK EASY SPEAK LOVE set during Prohibition. Love the fresh new take.

Not heard of either of these remakes. I don't watch too much science fiction. I don't watch too many remakes because so many of them are disappointing. Glad you liked BSG so much.

The Disturbed version of SoS is excellent, but I still prefer the S & G version. That was among the first records I ever bought--and on 45 RPM.

I can't recall ever having seen anything Battlestar Gallactica. It's possible, but I don't think so.

Sounds of Silence is a powerful song with amazing lyrics. I've heard others sing this and do well.

I absolutely love the remake of Sounds of Silence. After I did my post, I regretted not adding that song, too. Another song remake I like is the version of Paint it Black that was played in Westworld. I don't know who did that one, though.

Michelle Gregory said...

i never watched the Battle Star Galactica remake, but i'm betting the acting was better.

Jemi Fraser said...

I love that version too :)
Yes, there a lot of remakes that are truly awful!

Jemi Fraser said...

That sounds like a fun version! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I agree - so many of them are just awful! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I do like the S&G version as well - they both are very different in tone :)

Jemi Fraser said...

It really is! I've heard quite a few versions that work - probably because the original is so powerful too :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I don't know who did that one, but the version that's in my head is beautiful! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

LOL - it absolutely was better!!! :)

Sound of Silence - magnificent original, and brilliant cover, fantastic choice.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I'm with you, when the remake is different enough from the original to sound fresh...I like it. Probably because I am not judging it against the older version.

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks! They're both such beautiful versions - love them both :)

Jemi Fraser said...

That's so true! Being exactly the same is no fun at all :)
