IWSG & My Writing Space

The Insecure Writer's Support Group is the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. He, his clones, minions, friends, and fellow authors make it an amazing event every month.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

And we’re revving up IWSG Day to make it more fun and interactive! Every month, we'll announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

December 5th Question: What are five objects we'd find in your writing space?
  • Laptop (obviously!)
  • Mug of Chai tea - resting on a mug warmer
  • My R2D2 USB key sitting beside my BB8 Pez dispenser
  • A LotR map on the wall
  • Framed quotes of the 1st lines of my favourite books as well as my 1st published story (Until Release in Tick Tock: A Stitch In Crime)

How about you - what fun things are in your writing (or reading!) space?

I like the geek elements! So cool your first published story was in the IWSG anthology.

Future post alert: what are those favorite first lines from your favorite books? (Apologies if you've done that one already and I just don't remember)

Any fun things in my writing space are buried under piles of paper! Actually, I used to hang a paper sign up on a cabinet that said "Don't poke the bear" when I was writing, but I haven't used it in a long time. The family knows when I'm writing and largely leaves me alone.

That sounds like an inspiring space!

You and I are together on the laptop and the chai tea! What type do you use, if you don't mind my asking? My favorite is premium masala, but I'm wanting to branch out.

I need a mug warmer. I do have a Pez dispenser though - a Minion one.

First book lines is a great visual - so inspiring! I think I'll do one for my desk. And I had to Google the R2D2 usb key - adorable!

Too cool that your first published story is in the IWSG anthology. What an honor. I hope (one day) to join those elite authors... Like Alex's, your desk sounds a lot more fun than mine! Came over from CJ McKenzie's blog...

Why does everyone have way cooler USBs than me? :) My office is an evolving experiment in ergonomics at the moment while I try to get my spine back to a place where I'm in less pain.

Love seeing your work space. It's simple, like mine.

This question has been so helpful. I've discovered things I need to add to my space by reading all of the answers. Now I have mug warmer to put on the list. I often forget to drink my coffee before it goes cold. That warmer should do the trick. Thanks, Jemi.

I agree - love having that on my wall!
Love my geek touches too :)

LOL - that's a very good idea - and no, I haven't done it yet! :)
Love it! My family tends to be very good about that too

I mostly drink the chai from Tim Horton's - they give me a free extra bag when I order a large tea so there's always extra :)
I do like the masala chai too!

The mug warmer is fantastic!
Why am I not surprised it's a Minion??? :P

Jemi Fraser said...

Agreed! As long as we're comfy, it's all good!

Jemi Fraser said...

I do! :)

LOL - R2D2 is my favourite!
My daughter surprised me with the framed quotes as a gift and I LOVE them :)

It truly is an honour - and one that still makes me squee! :)
Lee's blog is always a wealth of information - and she is a wonderful person - a very good place to be! :)

LOL - my family knows me well! R2D2 was an Xmas gift from my B-I-L one year :)
It's so hard to get everything set up. I tend to write in the living room more than my writing space because I can't get it set properly either - I'm too short for my current set up!

Jemi Fraser said...

It is - all I really need is the laptop - and the tea!

You're very welcome! I got that mug warmer off Amazon a few years ago and it's been great!
Thanks again for the spotlight in the newsletter - you're the best!

LoTR maps is really cool. I have lots of things but only a few on my actual desk. The others are nearby on the shelves I have there to hold my goodies.

I like that idea of quotes from you favorite book. I may have to add that. Love my Star Wars. May the Force be with You.

I like the idea of the quotes as they can be good stimulants for inspiration. I have a list of "Rules to Live By" tacked on the wall above my computer. I should probably put a world or U.S. wall map up as well.

The LotR map is cool. I have the LotR books on my shelf next to my desk, but the map seems like it would be way more inspiring.

I love my quotes too! :)

It is fabulous!!!

I do too - it's fun to be surrounded by the fun stuff!

And also with you!!
The quotes do make me smile every single day!

Maps are great for thinking and creativity - also like your rules idea

I love my map - and the boxed set of the books is on the shelf as well!

Sounds like a great place to write! It would be fun to see your framed first lines! I have a corkboard with all sorts of things pinned to it: pics of characters, a photo with my critique partners, and a quote on a sticky note that I find inspiring. Fun that you have a LotR map!

Have a great week, Jemi! :)

I love my map - a favourite Xmas gift!!
I would love to have a pic with my crib buddies. I think I need to add a corkboard - great idea! :)

I'm wondering about the 1st lines of your favourite books. That's such a great idea to frame them and keep them in your writing space.
Happy Holidays, Jemi!
Thanks for all the twitter love.

I'll have to post about those first lines one day!!
