When I was younger, I really enjoyed the Back to the Future series, particularly when Doc Brown gets sent back in time and creates a time-traveling steam engine. I didn't realize till later that he (and Jules Verne, etc.) were "steampunk." It's just such a cool concept, with so much opportunity for alternate history, unique takes on technology, and all the fun fashion and etiquette of the era.
