Oops!

As you probably know, I'm not the savviest person when it comes to html and technical issues. I can do a lot of computer things well, but these things... not so much. Our family motto often is, "Technology hates me..." Yeah, not great as mottos go, but often accurate. :)

So, somehow someone attached some nasty html stuff (malware) to my blog. Several kind souls left me DMs and emails letting me know there was a warning up when they hit my blog. I'd never heard the word malware and when I checked out my blog, I couldn't see anything wrong.

I Googled the problem and found some helpful sites. The first scan told me there were no viruses. The 2nd said I had 'suspicious' html attached to my blog. Hmmm....

I Googled some more. Then I had to verify I owned the blog. Surprisingly difficult to do. Especially because the code they gave me didn't work. And then I had to insert html into the code section of the blog template - you know the section - the one with the nonsense words, letters, numbers running around knowing more than me. Yeah, that one. I had to find a spot and insert code.

And cross my fingers, toes, eyes & nose when I pressed Save Changes. I tend to break universes when I Save Changes. Surprisingly it (finally) worked. That of course took a while and only verified I owned the blog.

The technical explanations on how to find & safely remove malware are written in... okay, I'm not sure what language it is, but I don't speak it. (I REALLY need to take a course.)

I eventually guessed deduced that the problem was hiding in my blog roll. So, my apologies, but the blog roll had to go. I've since rescanned my blog and it says Clean (yay!!!). The Google Gods & Goddesses haven't emailed me back yet, but the warning screen appears to be gone.

So I hope no one else gets this malware thingy, but I thought I'd warn you that it's going around. I've heard of several people who've had it.

I run daily virus scans and update my virus thingy everyday. That didn't seem to matter. I don't know how it happened, so I don't know what advice to give. Just thought I'd warn you! Hope you stay safe!

Technology can be so difficult like that sometimes. I hate it too. And love it. Depend on it a bit. You know. :)

Hi Jemi,
I couldn't get onto my blog or my dashboard, yesterday. It kept saying there was a problem with your site and advised me against visited your blog or my blog.
I only noticed this problem using Google Chrome. Today, your site and my site, seem just fine. I ran a full system scan and all is fine with me. I have seen the warning message on a few blogs over the last few weeks.
Fingers crossed that is now okay for you :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Bethany - I do know! That love/hate thing can get pretty strong :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Gary - yikes! That's 2 people that happened to. I'm so sorry!!!

I don't have a clue what happened or how it could happen (I know nothing!). I'm so very glad yours is back to normal. Hopefully we all continue to stay that way... well as normal as we get :)

klahanie said...

Wasn't your fault, Jemi. Just a weird thing that has been going around recently. Anyway, we do seem to now have a semblance of 'normality' :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Gary - I'm just relieved it's not permanent & that we're back to business as usual. :)

I had several people emailing me because my site was linked to yours and they were getting a warning before visiting me! Sucks. Same thing happened to Lee last week.
Good to know it's safe to put you back in my blogroll!

Yikes. Is nothing sacred? And I thought innocent spam was obnoxious.

Jemi Fraser said...

Alex - Yikes! I didn't know it affected so many people - I feel so guilty! Sorry!

I hope it is over for everyone - it really sucks!

Jemi Fraser said...

Yvonne - yup - apparently nothing is sacred or safe any more! It's been soooooo frustrating!

A lot of people have had this problem. Glad to see you are up and running. Don't these knuckleheads have anything better to do than make life difficult on us peace-loving bloggers?

Jemi Fraser said...

Stephen - thank you!! I agree - I think I maybe insulted a few of those knuckleheads with my last post... Figures :)

Lisa Gail Green said...

Oh no! That sucks. I'm so sorry. Scary stuff. Don't these hackers have anything better to do with their time then mess with us?

"I tend to break universes when I Save Changes" Ha! You, too? I panic whenever I have to download software or anything.
I'm awed that you figured it out and did it!

I really need to get more tech savvy. I am going to take an html class in the future and web design class. I think it will pay off in triple dividends in the future. I got a malware virus a long time ago on my old laptop. It was heck trying to remove it. Malware viruses operate by the user initiating the contact. You have to click on a link, picture or something to get it and once you have it, they can steal your personal account info. I was not happy. Now I'm more cautious and pro active in what I click on.

Glad you got it fixed. I'm sure it was a huge headache.

Nice blog as well. I'm a New Follower.

Jemi Fraser said...

Lisa - I know - they're so annoying! It wasn't easy to fix ... mostly cause I'm no good at these things. I just hope it stays okay!

Jemi Fraser said...

Tricia - yay - a kindred spirit! We can take on those universes together!! :)

I had some advice from good people - and Google was a BIG help too!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lena - I didn't know all of that. Thanks for the info. I'll have to watch from now on too. I'm wondering if my clip art choices are weak... Have to work on that.

Thanks for the follow! :)

Many's the time I have had trouble like you expereienced and not being techincally minded have had to get someone in to correct the damage. I have a reliable malaware system but at times I still get the offending things on my pc.

Sorry you had to go through all that!

Several people on Twitter reported having problems with different sites...looks like there's some Malware out there, for sure.

Laura Pauling said...

That's pretty good you figured it out! Glad it worked out!

I know a few bloggers who had to delete their blogroll because of this malware problem!! Oh dear!!

Hope this nastiness goes away soon!! Yay for sorting it all out! Take care! x

Oh boy! The irritating thing too, is how much time it takes to fix when you didn't cause it! Thanks for the warning. And I'm glad you got it worked out.

I'm going to put a malware inventor in my next book just so I can have the pleasure of killing him off. I plan a slow and painful demise.

Hi Jemi! Glad things are now straightened out for you. Hopefully there will be no more problems.

Jemi Fraser said...

Mason - it took me a LOT of time - probably a lot longer than it should have - but so far so good! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Yvonne - I know how you feel! I do virus check ups daily and this still happened - so frustrating!

Jemi Fraser said...

Elizabeth - thanks - it was so annoying and frustrating! I hope no one else needs to go through it.

Jemi Fraser said...

Laura - thanks! I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop - but so far so good :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Old Kitty - I hope the nastiness goes far away and stays there. No one needs to go through all that fuss!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynn - it took me hours and hours to fix it. I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else!

Jemi Fraser said...

Linda - I don't often laugh out loud - but I just did! That's a perfect, perfect idea!! love it :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Susanne - thanks! I hope it's all resolved now. My fingers are getting cramped from being crossed so often :)

Susan Kaye Quinn said...

I'm tech savvy (well in a relative sense) but I'd have no idea what to do if my blog got infected. I mean, yikes! I'm glad you were able to figure it out. :)

Janet Johnson said...

Thanks for the warning! I would be lost in the process, too, I think.

So glad you're "clean" again. ;)

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - that makes me feel better! I thought I was more or less WAY behind in the techie things. I assumed everyone else would have been able to do it more easily. Glad to know I'm not as inept as I thought! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Janet - it's good to be clean! :) I hope it doesn't infect anyone else, but I feel better having sent out a warning!

Rosalind Adam said...

So glad to see you're back. Do we have a blog code? Should we all find out what it is now? I'm the same as you. I can work a computer that works but if something goes wrong I'm stuck. I removed my blog following list a few weeks ago for reorganising reasons and was about to put it back again but if that's a risk I may not... I wish we understood more about it.

Jemi Fraser said...

Rosalind - thank you! I had to insert a code that they gave me to prove I 'owned' the blog and was allowed to get the reports and find out what was wrong. Lots of fuss (for me anyway!) but it makes sense we have to verify!

That's my problem - lfe is too busy for me to squeeze n more tme, and I keep puttng off learnng this stuff!

Anonymous said...

I use Google Chrome and it kept blocking your site, but I clicked on "proceed anyway." Nothing happened after that, except that I was able to view your blog. And it did give me a specific blog in your roll that was the problem.

I'm glad you figured it out.

It sometimes takes me forever to make a small tweak to my blog.

Have a great weekend.

Jemi Fraser said...

Medeia - yes I got that specific blog listed too - but then so many people said they were having problems with the blog roll widget I decided to eliminate it for now. Hopefully it's all okay now. *crossing fingers*

Shelley Sly said...

For someone whom technology hates, it sure sounds like you kicked some butt! Good job conquering that malware! :D

Jemi Fraser said...

Shelley - thanks! I REALLY hope I did it properly!!! :)

Sorry to hear about the virus that is terrible :/ Thanks for the heads up though!!

Jemi Fraser said...

C'est la Vie - you're welcome. It sucked hours and hours away from my life - hope it doesn't do it to anyone else.

Lydia Kang said...

That happened to me once too and it was so frustrating! I'm glad you figured it out. :)

Michael Di Gesu said...

Thanks Jemi,

It hasn't happened to me on blogger, but it did on Twitter. What a pain to clear up the mess.

So sorry that it happened to you. Thanks for the warning.

Talli Roland said...

Oh no, Jemi! I'm glad you got it sorted though. I know who I'm emailing if it happens to me!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lydia - thanks. I'm glad too - although I think a lot of it was luck as I'm not terribly html savvy! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Michael - yikes! I wish these crazy spammers would find something positive to do with their energy, their talent and their time!

Jemi Fraser said...

Talli - thanks! I hope it doesn't happen though but I'm always willing to help :)

I always feel by the time I've figured out how to fix problem #1 on the computer, I'm so proud of myself (not being tech savvy either, but sometimes I get lucky).
Then problem #2 pops up...

Jemi Fraser said...

Anne - exactly!!!! That's exactly how my techie life goes most of the time! :)

Jackee said...

Very frustrating for you! I'm not tech savvy either, so now I know who I'm coming to if it happens to me. lol

Have a lovely Monday, Jemi!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jackee - I really hope it doesn't! I'm more than willing to help ... as long as I remember what I did! :)
