Jemi Asked: What did you enjoy most about writing a series based on natural disasters?

Chrys Fey’s Answer: Exploring the disasters, of course! The natural disasters are why I wanted to write this series. Other authors have written about disasters, even several of them, like the I Survived series for kids by Lauren Tarshis. Writing a series that (mostly) followed a single couple through multiple natural disasters, and blended crimes and romance, was a new concept. I had a blast with it.

I’ve always been fascinated by disasters and severe weather and Mother Nature’s revenge. In school, I only enjoyed science when we got around to learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. Disaster movies are also my favorite movies to watch. So, I feel I was destined to write the Disaster Crimes series. All good things must come to an end, though. I’m glad to be ending this series with Thorn and Amanda and the disaster featured in it, which I will reveal in a later post on my tour. 😉

EXCERPT:

Amanda looked up from the current list of up-to-date payments for classes. A movement outside the glass storefront caught her eye. She tilted her head to see a man coming up the sidewalk from the side where the picnic bench sat. Through the vertical blinds, she glimpsed a square face—a short, rugged beard and long, dark hair pulled into a man bun. Her breath fled from her lungs. Her body went from icy cold to flaming hot in the span of a millisecond. She dropped to the floor and slid under the counter, beneath the ledge where they put their purses and cell phones.

“What—” Beth peeked at the windows. Then she snapped her fingers at April and pointed at the stools.

April jumped into action. She pushed the stools in so they blocked Amanda. The bell attached to the door jingled as April removed the jacket she wore and draped it across the stools, creating a curtain to shield Amanda.

From a crack, Amanda watched Beth move to stand in front of the twins, who were in their walkers playing peacefully. “I’m sorry, but we’re going to be closing.”

“I don’t give a shit. I’m here for Amanda.”

The sound of Damon’s voice had her heart beating even harder. That voice had haunted her nightmares, had come back to life in her memories.

Beth cocked her head to the side. “Who? There’s no one by that name here.”

“Don’t bullshit me. I know she works here.”

His voice was closer now.

EXCERPT:

The crunch of the shovel pounding into the snow and ice filled his ears. It was all he could hear. The rest of the street was silent beneath its wintry blanket. Breathing was difficult with the icy air clogging his lungs. His nose burned. His throat was dry and on fire. But he ignored it, focusing on his task.

Crack, crack, crack.

He jabbed the shovel into a hunk of snow. On the third hit, it shattered into several pieces. He scooped them up and flung them to the side. He surveyed what remained. There was one big ball in the middle of the path that needed to be dealt with next. He moved over to it and struck it. That one impact had it severing in two. He was about to hit it again when something crashed into the back of his head.

Explosions of white light danced over his vision. Pain enveloped his skull. The shovel slipped from his fingers. Blackness cloaked his mind, coaxing him into its depths.

Beth. Her name was a whisper in his head as if his thoughts were being sucked into a wormhole.

His legs collapsed under his weight.

Cold. It seeped into him, consuming him. And then his consciousness fled down that same void that ate his thoughts.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

When I shared my story about depression and writer’s burnout, I received many emails, comments, and Facebook messages from other writers thanking me for my bravery and telling me about their own trials. That really put into perspective for me how many people suffer from depression and/or burnout in silence. I had no idea those individuals were impacted by these things, just as they hadn’t known that I was, because my outward presence to others was always happy and smiley and bright.

After the supportive response and upon realizing how many writers in my online circles were struggling, too, I wanted to do something to help. I was candid with my experiences and blogged about the things that assisted me through the rough times in the hope that it would aid others.

During this time, I recognized the need for writers to receive support, guidance, tips, reminders, and encouragement during their writer’s block, depression, and burnout. That’s how I got the idea for this book. A book not just about depression or only about writer’s block, but both, and much more.

FLAMING GUEST POST PART SEVEN:

I returned home at dusk. When I walked in the house with my family, the first thing we saw was one of our cats lying right there in the walkway, as if nothing had happened. I remember thinking that if the house would have burned down, this cat would’ve died.

Before we went to bed, Monkey, the pregnant cat who had run out of my sister’s arms came back home. She was okay. But…another one of our cats had run out the door in the chaos and was still out there, somewhere.

When I went to bed, I had been afraid. The house stank like burned wood. A brush truck purred loudly in the woods next to my bedroom, making sure the fire was out and no hotspots would flare up. I woke up several times in the middle of the night, thinking the house was on fire, because smoke was imprinted on my sight. I could see it in the darkness, filling my bedroom. It wasn’t real, but it was to me.

FLAMING CRIMES EXCERPT:

Trying to walk quickly, but not too fast to frighten the cat, was tricky. Beth made shooshing noises, as if she were comforting a baby, and fluffed the fur on Misty’s chest with her fingers, hoping the contact would soothe her. At Mrs. Caraway’s car, she slowly lowered her right hand to open the back door. Her plan was to gently toss the cat inside and shut the door before she could escape. She pulled on the door handle and had the door cracked open when Misty panicked. The cat fought her. Claws pierced through her T-shirt and sliced the skin on her stomach. Beth attempted to keep her hold on the lashing cat, but Misty let out a yowl and ran her nails up Beth’s arm. She let out a startled cry and instinctively released Misty, who darted across the lawn and into the woods. In her fear, Misty ran right to the thing she should’ve been running from—the fire.
