The challenge of writing short fiction.

You may think writing a 200 word story isn’t that challenging, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth. Some writers may actually say it’s harder than writing a full-length novel, and I know a few who don’t write shorter fiction because they can’t wrap their brains around it. Their muse only works in long form.

Writing short fiction is different from a novel. With novels, you have an unlimited number of words you can use to paint a picture for the reader. Short fiction you have restrictions on word count. You may only have 1000 words. You can even have as little as 50. When you have that limit, you are forced to choose more carefully. Your strokes have to be broader instead of going into minute details as you can with a novel.

The way I approach short fiction is similar to my novels. I just start writing. I figure out the story as I go and when I get to the end, I edit. I edit until the story is at the word limit I’ve imposed. That’s done by cutting descriptive words. The sentence doesn’t need the color of someone’s shirt for example. Thoughts the character has might get axed as well. If it doesn’t serve the basic story I want to tell, it can go.

Sometimes that doesn’t always work. Sometimes the story I’m trying to tell needs to be longer. When that happens, I stop worrying about word count and let it end as a novella or novel. I have a zombie apocalypse story I hope to release in the future that I initially intended to be 100 words. It ended at over 10,000!

Writing short fiction is a great exercise. It makes you think about word choices and their importance to the story. I encourage anyone who enjoys writing to give it a shot.

Patricia Jospehine and The Influencers

1. What's your favourite way of coming up with names for your characters?

I go to baby name sites and look up names and their meanings. Sometimes I try to pick a name that has a meaning that fits with the character's personality. Othertimes, the character tells me their name.

2. Let's talk titles. Hard or easy? How did you come up with Influencers?

Titles are hard. You have to come up with as few as one word that describes a 50 thousand plus word story??? I came up with Influencers because that's what the characters do: influence mortals. You can say that's lazy or just common sense. LOL!

Let's go with Common Sense - it totally works!!

3. You have to choose:

Light or Dark?

Light, it energizes

Vampires or Werewolves?

Vampires, duh! Why would you choose anything else? =P

Sunrise or Sunset?

Sunset. Both are pretty, but I'm always asleep during sunrise.

Wolverine or Iron Man?

Wolverine. He's not as stuck up as Iron Man.

Vacation in the City or at the Beach?

Vacation in the city because there is a lot to explore.

Spring or Fall?

Spring because the snow is freaking going away!

As you now know, Patricia's new book is called Influenced. I was lucky enough to read an early copy and it is a lot of fun! Here's my review!

The Influencers can't be seen by humans, but they sit on the shoulders of the mortals and whisper n their ears. Eating that extra piece of chocolate cake? Influencer. Letting your colleague use the copier first? Influencer.

The book contains three intertwined short stories with influencers dealing with their humans and trying to push them towards the Dark or the Light.

The stories are quick reads with intriguing characters (both mortal and otherwise). You'll find yourself thinking of the message behind the stories long after you finish the last page.

I had some questions for Patricia...

What attracts you to the paranormal genre?
I'm not entirely sure to be honest. I think it's the possibilities. You can take the myths and creatures and add twists and turns, but you don't want to worry about it being unrealistic as much as if you were writing about something we see in every day life.
Love that - the possibilities are endless and entertaining!!

After writing some of your scarier work, do you ever find it hard to sleep at night?
Nope because I used to read about serial killers before bed and that was scary.
EEK! I can't imagine! My nightmares would be endless!

What's next up?
Next is a collection of 3 short stories about the angels and devils who sit on our shoulders and whisper in our ears called Influenced. The first story in the collection is already available for free.
What a cool concept!! Can't wait to read that one!

What's your favourite Quick Bite? (food not story!)
That is easy: grilled cheese sandwiches as tomato soup. I requested that for nearly all my birthdays growing up. Sadly because of an autoimmune disease, I can't eat it anymore.

My review:

While this isn't my usual type of read (I'm a guaranteed Happy Ending type of reader!) I really, really liked it! This book completely pulled me in. I enjoyed the format of 200 word stories. These are fascinating snippets from a variety of viewpoints.

From spooky to serious to silly to thought-provoking to heart-felt, you'll find it all in these snippets.
