IWSG & Career Goals

The Insecure Writer's Support Group is the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. He, his clones, minions, friends, and fellow authors make it an amazing event every month.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

And we’re revving up IWSG Day to make it more fun and interactive! Every month, we'll announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

December's IWSG Questions: In terms of your writing career, where do you see yourself five years from now, and what’s your plan to get there?

This is the toughest question yet!

I'm not a great planner, but I am a great dreamer. So, let's see. In five years, I hope to have 3-5 novels out in my Bloo Moose series. I hope to be starting in on another series while continuing to add to Bloo Moose.

How am I going to get there?

Lots and lots of hard work! I've learned a ton since September (thanks to the amazing people I've encountered via a PitchWars contest) and I think this may finally be a doable goal. I'm still learning and have a ways to go, but I finally feel like that goal is within reach.

How about you? Are you more of a planner or a dreamer? Where do you hope to be?

  5. Good luck, Jemi. I'm in a different place in my life. But I think I've been both a dreamer and a planner!

  6. I have a hard time planning five months ahead, so trying to figure out the next five years is next to impossible for me. I guess that makes me more of a dreamer.

  7. I'm not a planner, either. Goals are great, though. Something to strive for. Sounds like you have the confidence to reach yours. Great!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family.

  8. "Lots and lots of hard work!" I love that answer because it's so honest. To reach any goal or plan, we have to put in lots of hard work. :) I wish you all the best, Jemi!

    1. Thankfully, we're not afraid of hard work - or we wouldn't be writers!! :)

  9. Yes, loads of hard work...that's the answer!
I was always taught that hard work doesn't kill you but is good for the soul.
You can do this. Keep at it.
    Happy IWSG Day!

  10. I'm more of a dreamer I guess. I do plan, but those plans never work out, so I use the dreams to keep me pointed in the right direction.

I dream, over-plan, and then revise the goals, as needed. :)

  12. More of a planner...man, I feel like as a writer I should be more of a dreamer. Maybe this is why self-publishing has been so alluring. Write on! You'll make your dreams and goals! Christy

  17. I'm passionate about planning, but it always takes me longer to finish a piece than I plan for it to take. But as long as I continue to work on it, I'm happy. It'll get finished eventually. Right?!?

  18. Hi Jemi. I think without planning and tons of hard work we won't make it, whatever 'it' is to each of us. I wish you well with your goals. :-)

  19. Jemi, I've always been a dreamer but recently have gotten pretty darn good at planning. It really takes both to make a lot of progress and see results so the detail portion of planning is working well for me.

  21. I guess I'm a planner AND a dreamer. Hard to say where I'll be in 5 years. I took an unexpected turn into corporate writing and am quite enjoying that right now. I just try to keep my mind open to whatever pops up! (So maybe I'm more of a dreamer....)
