'Tis the Season to be Sappy!

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one who knows me that I'm a bit of a sap. I can be a tough cookie about a lot of things, but stories with heart get me. So 'tis the season to find me with Christmas movies on in the background.

I even watch some of those really over the top ones where the plot is so predictable you know the ending within the first five minutes. I know they're going to syrupy sweet and deliberately sappy, yet I still find myself welling up. This amuses my family to a ridiculous extreme!

I tend to get teary with at least one scene from every movie. Rudolph's Island of Misfit Toys? The scene where the General enters the showroom in White Christmas? When the angel gets her wings? When the letters arrive in a Christmas on 34th street? These get me every single time.

How about you? Are you a fan of Christmas movies? What's your favourite?

I cry when poor Ralphie has to wear the pink bunny suit in A Christmas Story. (Just kidding!)
What scene in Gremlins gets you? It's sort of a Christmas movie...

I like those Christmas movies, too--and I agree...it's possible to get choked up during them! Especially the end of "Wonderful Life." :)

Alex - when they get wet of course!!! :)

Elizabeth - I can only watch Wonderful Life on a good day - otherwise I'm a total mess! :)

We watch The Muppet Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve and it never fails - we both cry over the death of felt. LOL

I haven't watched any in awhile. Too busy and often visiting family at this time of year. Maybe I'll check some out this year since we're home.

Oooo yes, the only movies I've been watching this month are Christmas movies!!! My absolute favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the original cartoon one with Boris Karloff narrating and voicing the Grinch. Love love love that one!

I get tears during the first three minutes of Prancer...and then again in the middle...and again at the end. It's a great movie, but if you don't want to cry I don't recommend it, LoL.

I have two photo boxes that are just Christmas DVDs I watch every December. It would take too long to list them all here!

Happy reading and writing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines

It's so difficult to pick a favorite, but I love A Christmas Carol. I watch lots of the sappy ones too.

The Polar Express movie makes me cry every single time. I can't even read the last page of the book (and the lines: My sister woke up one day and found she couldn't hear the sleigh bell. But it never stopped ringing for me, nor for those who believe) without tearing up. Total sap here too!

Jemi Fraser said...

Julie That's SUCH a good book! And that line does me in completely too :) Glad to have another sap in my corner! :)

I'm a sucker for the old animated TV specials--The Grinch and A Charlie Brown Christmas, in particular. Rudolph makes me tear up in the same spot as you, but it's so hokey now it's hard to watch. Though it's worth it for Yukon Cornelius.

Jemi Fraser said...

Jeff - I love Cornelius! And the Bumble!!! So good and definitely hokey! :)

Nothing wrong with being a sap, Jemi. Makes a change from all the ugliness in the world.

Happy Christmas!

Denise - thanks! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well! :)

I am a fan, mostly because Christmas is not such a festive affair here, not in my country and not in my family, so it warms my heart to see the sparkly celebrations over there :) I especially love festive editions of sitcoms :)

I love Christmas movies and try to watch as many as I can. They make me feel warm and fuzzy inside- predictable or not. I love A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, Frosty, Rudolph, A Miracle on 34th Street, this list goes on. Oh- and Charlie Brown, of course. :)

Wishing you a Merry Christmas!
Jess

Dezzy - I know a lot of Europeans don't make Christmas such a big deal as we do here (my parents are Scottish immigrants) but I like the warm fuzzies :)

Jess - I love all those ones too - there are so many good ones! :)

Hi Jemi,

As sappy as maple syrup, eh :) Miracle on 34th Street makes me go awe.

Jack Frost, starring Michael Keaton, brings a tear to my eye.

Gary :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Gary - I love both versions of 34th Street! My family's been bugging me to rewatch Jack Frost - I watched it once years back and found the snowman creepy! I'll have to try it again!

I've cried over Christmas movies, but I'm drawing a blank on which ones. Movies and songs tend to make me cry.

Jemi Fraser said...

Medeia - me too! They can carry such powerful emotions!

Susanne - White Christmas is one I always have to peek at if it's on! :)

Dezzy - warm fuzzies are the happy feeling you get when something really gets to your heart :)

MP - Bill Murray totally rocks!! Such a talented man! :)

I'm going to say this again ... we are SOoooo alike!

I can't get enough of Xmas films. The sappier they are, the better I like them :)

As for naming a few ... there are just too many, Sorry. I just love them all :)

Wendy - I think I'm the same - there are SO many!!! Must have been separated at birth! :)

How about when Linus explains the true meaning of Christmas to Charlie Brown?

Linda - that's another great one - love Linus!!

My son made us a whole schedule of when we're watching our favorite Christmas movies to make sure that we fit everything in between Thanksgiving and Christmas :) Tonight, it's Miracle on 34th Street, one of my favorites. Though I'm also partial to Elf and A Christmas Story, which aren't exactly sappy!

Jemi Fraser said...

Sherrie - that's awesome!! There are a couple of moments in Elf that get me though - love that one!! Have fun!
