Recovering

I did it! I managed to get my entire draft recovered and saved (in multiple places!) after my latest computer disaster. I even found the Changes file I needed to remind me of all the things I needed to tweak. I've updated my Mozy and Dropbox folders too.

In the process, I've been learning a lot about my new Mac.

It didn't take too long to get used to the touch pad - scrolling with 2 fingers, right click is now a 2 fingered click, and scrolling upside down.

I've also figured out most of my short cuts. I used the Home & End, Page Up & Down keys a lot on my old laptop, but they don't exist on my Mac. Between the Function & Command Keys, I've got most of those figured out. Took longer to figure out the Delete key being the old backspace & Fn+Delete being the old delete.

I'm still finding the positioning of the Command key awkward, but I assume I'll get used to it too.

Now, my big problem is switching between the Mac at home and the PCs at school. We'll see how messed up my brain gets with all the switching!

At this point I can't say I've really got a preference for either PC or Mac - I like them both. What about you? Are you a PC or a Mac user?

Awesome you recovered and saved everything. Sounds like you're been figuring out a lot.

I only have a PC and am fine with it.

You'll be comfortable with both before you know it. And I'm PC with my computers.

Wonderful news, Jemi! So glad you were able to recover your files.

We have PCs here. :)

That's wonderful you didn't lose anything. I would've been in a panic. I've never used a Mac, only a PC.

So glad you were able to find everything. I'm a PC person myself, but then I've never tried a Mac so it's not really a fair statement.

Once upon a time I was Mac all the way. Now, I haven't used one in something like 15 years, so I'm a PC guy. Glad you saved your manuscript!

I'm comfortable with my PC but I've always preferred MACs. I just can't afford them.

I've always wanted to try a Mac -- because I always hear such great things about them -- but I've been too chicken to make the conversion! :)

I've had a Mac for about 8 years, and I'm so used to it, I can't imagine going back. I'm so happy that you managed to retrieve all your info!

Glad to hear you're getting the hang of things! I use a PC, but I'd also like to learn Linux (a third option besides PC and Mac) at some point.

I've had both a Mac and PC, and honestly, I don't know. I like the mac's operating system, but I miss the customization of the PC and the gaming capabilities. However, I did eventually get used to switching between them at home and school - so there's hope!

OH MY GOODNESS! Losing files are the worst, so I'm glad you recovered. ME TOO! I've used a PC all these years and recently went to a Mac. Thought I was all that--technology wise, but I'm struggling. I have never written so little in all my life. But I think I can, I think I can and I am writing again.

Natalie - thanks. I'm relieved to have recaptured so much!!

Alex - I hope so. Kept double tapping my mouse pad at work today and nothing happened :)

Elizabeth - thanks! I was pretty relieved :)

Diane - I was a wreck :) I'm new to Mac - but it's good

Mason - that was me too. They both have their advantages I think!

Jeff - for me, it's probably mostly what I'm used to :)

Thanks Karen - you're so right about the counter intuitive bit!

Susan - I was lucky with some discount coupons from my book orders through school :)

DL - that was me too - and the $ was tough, but I'm liking it

Beth - thanks - I'm SO relieved!

Shelley - I don't know anything about Linux - didn't know anything about it :)

Bethany - thank goodness! I'm stumbling a bit :)

Teresa - that's what counts! The switch is tough, but it'll come. We can do it!!

I am SO happy for you that you were able to recover everything- even if it took a while. Awesome that you are learning a lot about your new computer. I love Macs, but I use a PC at work. It does take a little adjustment between the two- but they have a lot in common too. Good luck continuing to learn. :)

I'm on both. I love my Mac for some things. Hate it for others. I thought about putting in a parallel OX, but a techie friend said her's wasn't that good. Egad. I just want to write a book.

Hope all works out and glad you recovered your draft.

Wendy - I'm learning to love it :)

Jess - thanks! I'm thrilled to have my story back and in one piece. The switching back and forth is fun ... makes me laugh when I mess up :)

Lee - thanks! there are definite advantages to both for sure! :)

So glad you got your draft back, Jemi! I just switched over to a new laptop, too (but PC, not Mac). Switching over to Windows 8 from Windows 7 wasn't as difficult as I'd expected!

Now this is a recovery I can understand. I'm so glad. What a horrible feeling when you lose files. It's like being frozen in time for those first few minutes when you can't believe it!! I have an auto updater, use flash drives and save my novels onto the cloud. Hope I've got it all covered should disaster strike my Vaio!!

I'm a PC user, but I remember using Macs in one of my university's computer labs. I'm glad about the manuscript recovery.

Belle - thanks! I was relieved :) It's nice when change is easier than expected!

Denise - Frozen in time is exactly the feeling! Having multiples backups is an excellent idea!

Medeia - thanks - I'm so happy to have it all back!

First and foremost you got back what you lost. That is primary. I prefer PC while wifey likes her iMac. So it;s a matter of preference.

I back up yet still lose stuff. Amazing as I kick myself in the @$$. But I manage to recover what I need, learn from my mistakes, delete files I no longer need (muy importante) and go from there.

Whew! I'm glad you recovered your files. Personally, I don't like the Mac. I could see using it with certain types of tasks. I have several friends that LOVE their Macs and wouldn't use a regular PC for anything. :-) To each their own.

Congrats on recovering those files! I've lost some in the past, and it was always devastating, so I'm glad you managed to get a happy ending... :)

Heather - thanks! I was pretty stressed for a while!

NRB - I won't!!! (I hope :))

Nas - yes - big whew!!!
