Visiting at The Insecure Writer's Support Group

Hi, everyone!

Today I'm honoured to be guest posting over at the IWSG blog. It's such a great group of people, I'm thrilled to be visiting. I hope you'll join me -- and bring your thoughts about kids today and their reading and writing habits!

(For those who were here early, sorry about the mess of this post!! I had someone with a health issue and I totally forgot to come here and check out the post! Sorry :))

Favorite kid's book - The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

Nice post, Jemi.

I don't remember favorite books, but I do remember loving it when teachers would read to us. And not because it meant we weren't doing any work! There is just something so pleasurable in being read to.

Sounds like you're doing great work with your class, Jemi. Keep it up!

At my school, the kids are forced to read read read for scores. Although, I believe they are becoming better readers which is sooooo important, they are liking to read less and less. We'll see if our students turn to reading for pleasure when they are adults. I hope so.

I love reading aloud to students. I read 3 chpt books to 2 classes this year (my girls')

I think I'd mentioned to you before that Maniac McGee was set in the town I was born and went to church in. Here's a pic of the entrance to the zoo where Maniac lived with the bison. https://www.google.com/search?q=old+elmwood+park+zoo&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiwkJbau-vNAhWDFz4KHSV_AUUQ_AUICSgC&biw=1280&bih=603#imgrc=TA-OnQ-GjV1BSM%3A

Here's a picture of the bandshell where he lived for a while. If you walk to the right in the same park you'll eventually get to the zoo. https://www.google.com/search?q=Norristown+bandshell&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiY07a5vOvNAhVBVj4KHV0VAgIQ_AUICigD&biw=1280&bih=603#imgrc=ruxTnFbkaGXC8M%3A

Thought you might be interested in those places for your kiddos. :) Keep on reading to them and I will too!!

Great ideas! My very visual kid (now a teen) made the switch gradually from graphic novels to straight up narrative, though this summer she's gobbling up manga. The visual stimulation always appeals to her first.

I read to her a ton when she was younger, and she liked to draw while I read to her once we switched from picture books to chapter books.

I read your post at IWSG. It was exactly what I thought you'd say about reading for young people and how you approach it in your classes. Insert BIG HEART here.

That is so awesome!! I've bookmarked all the pics for later on. They'll love it! (As I did/do :))

It is such a pleasure to hear the story - love it! :)

Reading only for the scores and being forced to choose certain books based on levels drives me crazy. We have to find pleasure in it as well!

Thanks Susan! :)

That's awesome. I love that we have so many great options for our visual readers! I loved my comics when I was a kid and I enjoy a lot of the graphics available today, too!

Hi, Jemi. Sorry about the 2 deletes above. I'm on Wordpress now, and first I came through as unknown. Then I fixed it but deleted the next post accidently. !!!

So....here's my original comment:

I haven't been to see you in a long while. I stopped blogging for a time because of my disabled daughter's needs, and because I don't have as much energy as I used to (I'm now 76); but recently I've felt energized, and Denise Covey urged me to come back, which I have on a limited basis to connected again with some "old" blogger friends. She's extending the invitation to you and me and a few others to accept the Liebster Award, and so I've decided to do it. I have a new WordPress blog (It's easy to comment on mine) and I'm using it as the Award says for developing relationships, in my case re-establishing some relationships. I see some interesting faces, some familiar, here on the comments. And now I'm going to check out your guest post on ISWG. (I set up a blogspot blog with a link to direct people to my wordpress site where I've made it very easy for Bloggers to comment...really. Hope you'll stop by.)

Penny is awesome! (As are you :))

I can read your comments on my email, but they don't show here. I'm sending my best wishes for you & your daughter. Off to visit your blog! :)
