Top Ten Movies

The Ninja Captain Alex J Cavanaugh is at it again! I think his original Dirty Dozen Blogfest was the 1st blogfest I participated in, so I'm happy to do this one again!! :)

Favourite movies are hard! There are sooooo many great ones out there!

Okay - for a movie to have made my list I decided I'd have to have watched it several times and still want to watch it when it comes on late night TV. I could make my whole list from the SciFi genre, but I forced myself to take 4 from other places.

From WAY back...

The Wizard of Oz - I remember waiting desperately for this to come on once a year when I was a kid. The moment when Dorothy opens the door and the movie changes from black and white to colour is pure magic! And the characters are awesome ... the flying monkeys, the lion and most of all the scarecrow! Almost a perfect movie!

The Sound of Music - another one I waited for every year. (Never did figure out why these 2 were considered Christmas movies though.) We even had a record of the songs. I think I can still sing them all word for word!

Regular Movies

Bourne Identity - love the premise and the character and the discovering of layers and layers of deception. Amazing stuff. The books were better than the movies, but I still really enjoyed it!

Blindside - Such a powerful movie! Sandra Bullock is fantastic!

And SF & Fantasy

Star Trek - Wrath of Khan - KHAN!!! Love, love that movie, although when he puts the thing in his ear, I still turn away. :)

Star Trek - Voyage Home - Ridiculous I know, but I love that scene with Spock on the bus and the punk with the stereo. Spock makes that whole movie for me!

Star Trek - the new one. I was so nervous/excited when they decided to start the series in a new direction. Brilliant. Can't wait for #2!

Star Wars - cheating here - counting the original trilogy as one movie! So many great characters, so many great scenes. Love it!

Serenity - It's such a shame Firefly was discontinued before it really had a chance. Such fabulous characters and setting! I could watch this series over and over and over!

LotR - cheating again! I watch these movies several times a year. These are my #1 favourites. It's not only the story line that shines, it's the incredible play of light and shadow, the camera angles, the pauses and silences. Total beauty.

As I read over the list, I realize there's not one single movie on here anyone else in my family would put on their lists! Not one! I do tend to be a little different...
How about you - do you like any of these movies?

Ack! I forgot Blideside. I'm not sure it would have made my list but it deserved to be considered. I forget about it.

LD Masterson said...

Oh, heck. I shouldn't comment late at night. Make that Blindside.

I find that "Wizard of Oz" was just one of those films I hold deep into my heart and some of my childhood nightmares. Flying Monkeys... and those Trees...

Serenity rocks my list and LOTR is my all-time favorite. Not cheating at all - it is basically one film.

I love the Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music too - they mean holidays and fun to me because that's when they were always on telly.

Bourne FTW! I've never seen Blindside or heard of it actually, I shall have to check it out.

As for your Sci-Fi and Fantasy choices, brilliant (sssh, don't tell anyone, but I've always had a soft spot for Voyage Home too, and you're right, Spock makes it).

It's funny--I always think of Wizard of Oz as an Easter movie. But I remember those once/year showings, too.

I think Khan was the best of the Trek movies (though I have yet to see the new one).

Yvonne Osborne said...

I'd have to agree with your first two. And I guess the last one is one everyone's list. The in-between, I'd have to think about. I love drama and westerns, like Argo and Girl w/the DT, and Lonesome Dove.

I was introduced to the old Star Trek movies when I used to babysit. Khan!! LOL
I really enjoyed all of them!!

I still want to see The Blindside.

Love that you categorized, Jemi, although I'm not seeing much contemporary romance on the list. :)

If I'd had one more slot, The Wizard of Oz would have been #11. Happy to see it here.

Jemi Fraser said...

Editors - thanks! I've added a ton to my list too :)

Martina Boone said...

You do have a theme going, Jemi! I suspect you like action films? :)
And fantasy? Just a bit?

I like all of these, but my family LOVES all of these. My favorites are Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, Steel Magnolias, The Help, A Knight's Tale, Die Hard, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, My Fair Lady, Gladiator, Dr. Strangeglove . . ., Rear Window, Vertigo, The Mouse that Roared, War Horse, Life of Pi, Argo

Now that I look at it, that's a very strange list. I guess I like what I like. But what it comes down to, I think I like characters. The bigger the better. :)

Anonymous said...

The reboot of the Star Trek movies are amazing (so far! I hope the second one doesn't disappoint). :3

Jemi Fraser said...

Martina - Just a little bit :) I love your eclectic list too!! I haven't seen all of those yet but the ones I have I like! Can't eve watch Steel Magnolias again though - sobbed SO hard in the theater!
