Favourite Genres

Genre Favorites Blogfest, September 17, 2012
One blogfest, four favorites!

Ninja Captain Alex J Cavanaugh is at it again! Another awesome blogfest with fun questions. Click on Alex's link to check out the other people contributing.

Favourite Movie Genre: Science Fiction
  •  even though my favourite movie of all time is probably the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I have to go with sf, not fantasy. There are SO many great sf movies - starting with Star Wars (although some folks categorize this as fantasy) , through the Star Trek movies to Serenity to so many more. Love them!
Favourite Music Genre: Rock
  •  this one is really tough for me. Even tougher than books. I listen to a wide variety of music and love most of it. I'd have to say I prefer the lighter rock to heavier rock, but there's nothing quite like a rock beat to get you moving!
Favourite Book Genre: Romance
  •  I love watching a relationship develop between the two characters, knowing there's a Happy Ever After in store for me. I LOVE books in so many genres (sf, fantasy, suspense, adventure,...) but time and again I find myself going back to romance.
Favourite Guilty Pleasure: ...
  •  this was tough - once again, there are so many to choose from! I love a lot of old cheesy music especially, but I think my biggest guilty pleasure is a movie, but not from my favourite genre. It's Miss Congeniality. Sandra Bullock is so much fun in this one. So many scenes make me smile - lots of fun!
Help me out here - tell me one of your guilty pleasures from one of those categories! Please!! :)

I also picked rock for music.

It's been years since I've seen Miss Congeniality, and I thought it was a fun movie.

Kyra Lennon said...

Yay for being a romance fan! :D It's definitely my favourite genre too!

Old Kitty said...

What's not to like about Miss Congeniality!?!? It had William Shatner!!! That's enough reason to love it! Yay! LOL! Take care

Enjoyed your list!

I read a breakdown of Miss Congeniality recently...think it was on Beat the Cat's blog. It was a really well-constructed movie, designed to appeal!

Natalie Aguirre said...

Loved your list. My guilty pleasure is watching the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies multiple times.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Science fiction and rock - you rock, Jemi! And Miss Congeniality was a fun movie. I enjoyed it!
Thanks for participating in my blogfest.

great picks! it is hard to choose with so much good stuff out there!

Jemi Fraser said...

Medeia - rock covers so much ground - it's a great style!

Kyra - there are so many great stories in the romance genre :)

Old Kitty - Shatner is awesome in that show! Love when he continues to sing despite the chaos!

ELizabeth - that's so interesting! It's such a fun story :)

Natalie - I don't feel guilty when I do those at all! Love those movies :)

Alex - you're very welcome! It's another great blogfest!

Tara - there really is! There's lots of variety :)

PR said...

Great picks. I just recently started reading romance - it's much better then I thought it would be :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Anna - yay! I think a lot of people would be surprised at the quality of stories in the romance genre. There are so many negative perceptions out there and they're just not right!

Rock is my favorite type of music.

And I loved Miss Congeniality.

LD Masterson said...

I'm doing Alex's blogfest, too. Such a fun one.

I like your choices (Star Trek TNG was my favorite of the series) and I enjoy Sandra Bullock in just about all of her movies, including Miss Congeniality.

Ellie Garratt said...

Awesome choices, especially science fiction. I loved Miss Congeniality as well - seen it on more than one occasion.

Cindy said...

Interesting list. We have SF and Rock in common.

Tina said...

I love Miss Congeniality, too. Bought it. I'm one of those people who watch favorite movies over and over again, like listening to a favorite album (which be one by Bruce Springsteen)
Nice to meet you! My blogfest entry is:

Jemi, I'm now convinced I have way too many guilty pleasures, which is probably why didn't get much writing done this summer. I got on a dystopian novel kick, especially YA end of world as we know it stories, and I haven't quit yet.

Allison said...

Serenity is one of my favourite sci-fi movies. Even though it is technically part of a series, it is still fantastic in its own right.

Hi, Jemi! Great list. I've never seen Miss Congeniality, but may have to see if I can find it.

Christine Rains said...

Great list! One of the things I love most about romance is that it can stretch out and mingle with all genres.

Jemi Fraser said...

Jeremy - I assume you mean music group? - I like the old stuff from the 70s & 80s - Boston, Queen, Foreigner, Loverboy... :)

Diane - it's such a fun movie! Makes me smile every time :)

Karen - rom coms are so much fun - there have been a lot of good ones!

Linda - TNG is my favourite as well - love that series. Sandra Bullock is one talented actress!

Ellie - I love sf - which makes my family very confused as no one enjoys it at all!

Cindy - thanks! I expect I'll see a lot of rock around the block :P

Tina - nice to meet you too! The Boss is a great choice! I love the movie/album analogy - perfect!

Pat - that's a great genre!! I love dystopians - and there are a lot of great ones out there!!

Allison - I never saw Firefly on TV when it originally aired, but I think I've worn out my DVDs :)

Susanne - it's a fun movie! The makeover scene is so good!

Jemi Fraser said...

Christina - exactly!! I love so many genres, but having a romance in them makes most of them better! :)

S. L. Hennessy said...

Another sci-fi and rock fan. Nice. Looks like we're taking over this blogfest. Excellent taste!

Tamara said...

I love romance too. I mostly read YA, but romance in any book (or movie) always makes the story better, doesn't it? :)

Jemi Fraser said...

SL - awesome! I prefer the old 70s and 80s rock - more classic stuff :)

Tamara - it really does! It's something we all want in life and it's nice to anticipate those HEAs!

LynnRush said...

I'm noticing a lot of Sci-Fi lovers on this blog fest. :) Nice to meet you!!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynn - you too! I love a good sf story whether on pages or on screen :)

DMS said...

I love all kinds of music- but I think rock is up there with my favorites. Guilty pleasure- old reruns of 90210 (it brings me back to high school and college).
~Jess

Jemi Fraser said...

Jess - I never did watch 90210 although I can't remember why. It was sure popular 'back in the day'! :)

Michael Di Gesu said...

Hey, Jemi,

I LOVED MISS CONGENIALITY! MIchael Caine is THE BEST! I laughed my ass off.

Great choice an NOTHING to feel guilty about ... LOL.

Jemi Fraser said...

Michael - I'm pleasantly surprised by how many people like Miss C! Caine is brilliant in the movie - such a great cast!! :)

Lauren said...

Serenity was a fun movie. I think the sci-fi genre has great potential for comedy. Not that it doesn't have drama as well. :)

Anonymous said...

There has been a little debate as to whether Star Wars is sci-fi. I believe it is. Great list.

Jemi Fraser said...

Lauren - I LOVE Firefly and Serenity! The comedy aspect is such an important part of so many movies. I love it! :)

Sydney - I believe it's got a bit of both sf and fantasy - probably why it's caused such a stir! :)

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Yay for Serenity!! And I loved Miss Congeniality!!!

Jemi Fraser said...

Lynda - Serenity is truly awesome! :)

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I really, really want world peace too! I enjoy that movie also.
You're right about a lot of great scifi movies.

Jemi Fraser said...

Susan - world peace for the win! :)

Livia Peterson said...

I love romance books, too! :)

James Garcia Jr said...

Hi, Jemi. I was never much for fantasy, instead reading mostly horror and thrillers, but The Lord of the Rings was too good to skip. It was done so well. It caused me to go back and read those books that I had ignored for years.
I love all kinds of Rock music. I bet we share many of the same favorites. Thanks for sharing.

I loved Firefly and Serenity. I'm totally with you on the romance. I get testy when I discover I'm reading a book without any.

Beth Zimmerman said...

Super quick drive by comment - I wanted to let you know that I have finally found my way back to blogging although I have a new "home." Would love it if you would come visit me. http://www.masterpiece-beth.com/2012/09/17/a-moment-of-absolute-clarity =) Love ya, Jemi!

My guilty pleasure is probably horror movies. I don't know why, but I love them.

Talli Roland said...

Yay for romance!

Great choices, Jemi. And Miss Congeniality is such a fun movie.

Jemi Fraser said...

Livia - romance is a happy genre - who doesn't want a little happy? :)

Jimmy - LotR is pure magic for me! I've read the books quite a few times. I love the old, classic rock so I bet we do share a few faves! :)

Kari - it was such an excellent series - way too short though!!

Beth Z - yay!!!! So glad to have back up - hope all is well. I'll stop by as soon as I can! :)

Beth - it's SUCH a fun movie! If it's on, I always catch a few minutes of it! :)

Susan - I wish I did! I have far too many nightmares as is - so I don't watch it at all!

Talli - thanks! I love the movie - so many great scenes! :)

DEZMOND said...

I love that everybody loves sf :) and I have a feeling all of you bloggers are members of some rock cult, since all of you had the same fave genre of music :)

Misha Gerrick said...

Mmmmm.... I don't think I have a guilty pleasure, because I don't really feel all that embarrassed about anything I do/listen to. :-D

Jemi Fraser said...

Dezzy - I do love my sf! :) In rock, I prefer the lighter stuff, but there's nothing quite like it!

Misha - and that's exactly as it should be! I grew up in a family where no one understand my interest in sf or romance, but they didn't try to stop me reading and watching it! :)

Beth Zimmerman said...

Favorite Movie Genre: Romantic Comedy - without gratuitous nudity & sex =)

Favorite Music Genre: I can listen contentedly to most anything except Rap, Metal, Screamo, etc. but my favorite is Contemporary Christian/Praise and Worship

Favorite Book Genre: Legal/Political or Medical Suspense

Guilty Pleasure: Reality TV =) Survivor starts tomorrow!

Jemi Fraser said...

Beth - I love romantic comedies too - they're such fun! If you can believe it, I've never watched an episode of Survivor. There are so many people who love it, I should probably give it a shot one day... :)

Cynthia Chapman Willis said...

I love your picks, but I haven't seen Miss Congeniality. How did I miss this one? Clearly I need to do something about this. : )

Jemi Fraser said...

Cynthia - thanks! You have to see Miss Congeniality. It's such a wonderful story and the cast is truly amazing!! :)

Christina Farley said...

I'm really enjoying this blog fest. It's fun to see what different people pick.

J.L. Campbell said...

Hey, Jemi,

Love me a great romance. As for a guilty pleasure in this category, it would be one of those potboilers that you just can't put down.

Jemi Fraser said...

Christina - I agree! It's a ton of fun! :)

Joy - there's nothing like a satisfying romance! And I know what you mean about those potboilers :)

I would have found this blog-fest hard too! Sometimes Fantasy is my favorite, like Narnia, and other times animation, like Beauty and the Beasty, and other times a comedy like Hitch. 'Hitch' is my "Miss Congeniality." When Will Smith is on his first date and swells up from his allergic reaction to seafood--lol. Makes me laugh just thinking about it.

nutschell said...

Miss Congeniality was so much fun. Sandra is so good at comedies:)

Nutschell - She really is! Such a talented actress! :)

Saumya said...

AH!! LOVE Miss Congeniality. I so wished I could be friends with Betty Lou Freebush :) Great list---love the rock and romance, too!

Missed Periods said...

I am powerless against Jerry Maguire. If it happens to be on, I'm watching it.

Jemi Fraser said...

Saumya - yay! It's such a fun movie!! :)

Missed Periods - I enjoyed that one too - although I think I've only seen the whole thing once :)

Jack said...

Science Fiction is so much fun! The possibilities are wonderful, all the things one can create in space. (And the spaceships are pretty cool too.)

Allons-y!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jack - the spaceships are all very cool! My favourite would have to be Serenity from Firefly! :)

Jackee said...

Great list! I'm like you--I have a hard time picking just one style of music. My guilty pleasures? Pellegrino sodas and aromatherapy. :o)

Have a great night, Jemi-dear!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jackee - It's hard to choose favourites! I don't know what Pellegrino sodas are ... off to look them up!

Jack said...

Replicators would be great!

Allons-y!

Jemi Fraser said...

Jack - wouldn't they though! :)

Michelle Wallace said...

I've really enjoyed the diversity in styles and choices amongst the bloggers.
Sandra Bullock is the poster girl for the cute, slightly awkward, charming and wholesome girl-next-door...

Jemi Fraser said...

Michelle - she really is! The blogfest has been so much fun - so many different favourites :)

Nas said...

Enjoyed your list! Lovely!

Jemi Fraser said...

Thanks Nas! :)

I love comedies, and action in my movies.

Books - I prefer non fiction adventure stories, but my guilty pleasure has become YA paranormal romance. After years of refusing to read romance, I'm now hooked. Shhhh!

Jemi Fraser said...

Terry - I like those movies too. I think it mostly depends on my mood! :)

And I'll never tell about your enjoyment of romance! I've read several really great YA paranormals too - such a fun genre!
