Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
And we’re revving up IWSG Day to make it more fun and interactive! Every month, we'll announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.
September 6 Question: Have you ever surprised yourself with your writing? For example, by trying a new genre you didn't think you'd be comfortable in??
My poetry always surprises me. I don't write it all that often, but when I do it is often dark. Scary. Deep. Disturbing. Twisted. Definitely showing the darker side of humanity.
For those who don't know, I write contemporary romance and romantic suspense with light-hearted banter and doses of humour. Always with a Happy Ever After.
It's quite a contrast, but that's just the way it happens.
What about you? Any surprises in your writing? Do you write poetry too? Do you prefer the dark and twisted or the HEA?

Maybe with poetry there is no pressure so you just go for it?
I like reading dark and twisted as well as light and happy stories.
My writing has surprised me more in terms of where stories have taken me. More than once I've sat back after typing a line or paragraph and thought, "Huh, didn't see that coming!"
Poetry just escapes me. I don't think in a way that really encourages poetry, I guess.
When I was younger, my poetry (song lyrics I called it) was much darker, too.
I feel the same way about poetry for me. It's nothing I would readily share, but I find a different 'me' when I try my hand at it.
Wow! You write in a lot of different genres. I can't write poetry. That's awesome that you can.
I don't write poetry, but there's a guy in my crit group who does. It's surprisingly dark, and makes me wonder what all he's gone through in life.
My short stories are dark and twisted, for the most part. But my novels have some darker elements but are much lighter in tone than my short stories. I write bad poetry :)
Oddly enough, I just finished writing what I can definitely say is my darkest poem ever.
And odder still, it's part of a rather dark and gloomy anthology idea I have. But the ease with which it's all coming out is astounding me.
That could definitely be the case!
Me too - it all depends on my mood :)
Love that feeling when the writing surprises me too!
Everyone is so different - which is what makes reading and writing so much fun! :)
There's something fun about exploring that dark side - just can't live in that world long enough to write a novel!
Me too! I don't think I've ever shared my dark poetry either
It's fun! And I think my Tigger brain contributes to the variety of genres I write :)
Yep! Poetry can really dig deep into my psyche too. Sometimes it's about the fears and worries rather than the realities tho!
LOL - I doubt it!
Must be something about 'short' that works well for dark and twisted :)
Wow - that's pretty cool! Dark can be fun - but I can't live there for long!
I've tried writing poetry but I can't seem to do it. Cool that your voice is so different for it.
My poetry in school was pretty dark, but as a teen so was I. Thank goodness that's behind me. :-)
Anna from elements of emaginette
When I write poetry, it's often dark, too.
It sure makes it fun! And, no matter my mood, I've got something to write! :)
I bet! I'm generally upbeat and happy, but the world can weigh heavily at times.
So interesting that many of us are similar!
I wrote a poem in high school called, "Oh Happy Death." It earned me a trip to the counselors office. I recently had a character's reaction in a scene blindside me. It totally worked though. Thank you, subconscious.
I'd say writing the poetry gives you the balance you need to write the 'happy ever afters.'
LOL - our subconscious brains are a LOT of fun! It always makes me smile when people assume poetry MUST be a personal view :)
Oh! I like that - I bet you're right! :)
Hi human, Jemi,
Nothing like a bit of contrast in doing various forms of writing. I know my human dad has done some poetry that went down well when he did some guest poetry on another blog site.
As for me, I'm the pawfect pawetic pawet. Yep, Penny the pawet, don't you know it.
Pawsitive wishes,
Penny 🐶
As a reader, I enjoy all kinds of stories, but as a writer...I definitely gravitate toward the dark and twisted. LOL. Interesting to see how your poetry and romance stories differ from each other!
How interesting that your poetry is such a different style from your usual writing. Poetry does tap into something unique and deep in us. My poetry is often sadder than I would expect.

I think writing poetry encourages us to explore deeper feelings and concepts. I think poetry is the finest form of writing. :-)
You are definitely my favourite pawet, Penny! :)
The dark and twisted can be lots of fun. I just can't live in that world long enough to write a novel! :)
It IS fascinating! Poetry does reach deep down and bring out all kinds of emotions!
I agree - there's something very special about poetry!
Hello!! I'am glad to read the whole content of this blog and am very excited. Thank you…
