The IWSG & Covers

The Insecure Writer's Support Group is the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. He, his clones, minions, friends, and fellow authors make it an amazing event every month.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

February 1 question - If you are an Indie author, do you make your own covers or purchase them? If you publish trad, how much input do you have about what goes on your cover?

I made the cover for Dancing With Dementia. I loved the experience of learning how to use photoshop and create layers and elements. I enjoyed finding just the right image and choosing fonts and colours.

What I didn't enjoy? The time commitment! And while the result is fine and portrays what I want it to portray, I'm sure the cover will get an update at some point.

I have a talented family member who is terrific with graphics. She enjoys studying fonts and putting the images together. She loves the challenge of branding the series and keeping the look of each series separate. I LOVE the results of her work and I was more than happy to turn over the job of designing covers to her.

What about you? Any talented family members helping you out in your business? Anyone great with graphics and fonts and the rest?

Your talented family member does such a nice job with your covers. I think they look fantastic. I don't have any talent for graphics and fonts and I certainly don't have the patience to figure out how to put everything together, so I always have to hire a cover artist.

I like the Bloo Moose covers very much. Though I'm yet to read them. Hopefully soon!

Hi Jemi, your book covers look great. I have no family members helping me with graphics or anything else related to writing.

How wonderful to have the support of (another) talented family member. Her work complements yours so well.

Don't blame you there. Knowing an artist and letting them loose on a project is definitely the way to go. :-)

I don't make my own covers. I know a little about basic graphics, but making a cover requires way more than I'd want to attempt. How wonderful you have such a great family member!

That's awesome that you have a family member who can do your covers. They look great!

Whoa, you actually enjoyed making the Dancing With Dementia cover. Awesome. It looks fine. But most indies end up changing covers multiple times. I intend to get all mine remade when I finish publishing the books in the queue. So I'm not too fazed by my disappointments.

Hi, Jemi! No talented family members for me I'm afraid, although I do have some artistic relatives. I think your cover for "Dancing with Dementia" is excellent. Time is my biggest challenge. I'd be getting a professional. Have a creative February!

Anna - I agree! I can see me playing with the program for fun - but I need someone with more talent!

Carol - I'm very, very lucky!

Sarah - thank you - she's terrific!

Denise - I did have fun playing with the program and learning all the ins and outs of fonts and colours... but I need someone with more talent :)

Fundy - thanks so much! I haven't felt the need to update it yet because I love the image of the couple :) Time is such a limited resource!

Debbie - I'm very lucky & I'll pass along the compliment!

I really like your cover for Dancing, and wish I could do as well! I don't have any family members of my own, but am generally happy to pay someone else's family member to do my covers, though I would love to be able to do it myself. Just not really in my skill range.

I can get sucked into finding fonts to use for graphic design. There's so many pretty ones!

Rebecca - thank you - it was a lot of fun to make! I don't have the 'eye' my family member does, so I'm very grateful!!

Lynda - thank you - I think she's fabulous!!

Patty - there are!! She's a font fanatic too!

Time commitment. That's a deal breaker for me. That and no talent. LOL Wish I did have a relative who enjoys the work.

I really wish I had someone in the family to help with the graphics side of things, I'm a bit rubbish at it myself. My daughter is currently doing art as a GCSE so maybe I can bring her in on a few projects.
Your covers look great!
