Q

As a writer, my A to Z challenge is going to be about books, characters, TV shows and movies that have impacted me somehow. Enjoy! Be sure to check out Lee’s blog to find more bloggers taking on this challenge!
Q

Q is a great character from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also visits a few of the other Star Trek worlds. I love Q because he would drive me absolutely batty in the real world. He’s an omnipotent being who is utterly obnoxious. Yet, you can’t help liking him, hoping for him to (finally) redeem himself. If you’re trying to make your characters flawed, yet not completely unlikable, check out Q – we can learn a lot from him! Villains are so much more fun when we like at least part of their personalities!

Who’s your favourite flawed character?

I probably saw all of the original Star Trek episodes many times, but that's where it ended. After about 1975 I stopped keeping up with most television series. I guess most characters have flaws, but right now can't think of any.

Q is definitely a cool character! I'm not sure why I like him so much.

Oh Q! This totally brings me back - at least he livened up Next Gen (forgive me lovely Trekkers but I was SO not an ST: Next Gen fan)!!

Take care

He had just enough charisma for us to tolerate him.

I love great characterization. Q has that. Great choice for 'Q'.

Every villain usually has something likeable about them. Look at Hanibel Lector! I don't remember Q. Oh....he's from the Next Generation. That's why. That's about the time I gave up tv,Jemi. How else would I have time for this?

Lee - I think they do too - that's what makes them fun! :)

Lynda - me too. He's annoying, self centred and know-it-ally - but he's fun! :)

Old Kitty - I love TNG! And Q is such fun!

Alex - he did! too much fun :)

Ciara - he really does!

Yvonne - so true! I never did watch Hannibal - way too wimpy for tht!

I met John de Lancie at a sci-fi convention once! He's really, really tall. Much taller than you'd think from seeing Q. :)

I love The Closer, and although she is the heroine of the show, she has flaws that make her unlikeable sometimes, yet those flaws are what makes her indefatigable and strong. They are why she is "The Closer"

Best regards to you. Ruby aka Grammy

Q is a great character. I also liked Jayne Eyre's Mr. Rochester.

I adore Q and I loved it when he brought his immature son to Captain Janeway in VOYAGER to babysit him :))) I'd love to be a Q!

I've never even seen an episode of Star Trek :( I know, so deprived.. haha. My favorite flawed character - I don't know why, but Scarlett O'Hara popped into my head first. She's spoiled and snobby, but there's such strength and spunk in her.

He is a great character!

I really liked Q! He was one of my favourites.

well it is not a book--but i think "rhoda" from the mary tyler moore show was great and "hawkeye" from mash

My favorite flawed character was Snape, from the Harry Potter series. I thought he was so well-developed, and it's an inspiration to me when I write my own less-than-heroic characters.

cleemckenzie said...

Oh, yes. He was terribly annoying, yet intriguing. Those are the best kind of characters.

I love Star Trek, I'm still on the original series though so I've yet to meet Q. He sounds like a, well, interesting villain. I like villains who are more complex. There is more to them then the typical, "I hate you and want to kill you."

Oh, and thanks for the vote 8-D

A Bit Unlikely,
Jack

I loved Q. Sure, half the time you wanted to slap him. He was so much more dynamic than he at first appeared; and the rare episodes when he got serious were captivating.

Margo Berendsen said...

My favorite episode was when he lost his power! I love Q! So glad to see him reappear here and good point about him being a character worth study.

Shelley Sly said...

Q!!! Q is so intriguing. You're right, he's a great example of a villain who is flawed but has some likable qualities. He always ups the stakes, too!

I remember watching The Next Generation with my dad when I was little and I knew something crazy was going to happen when Q came on the screen! He was a fun character.

S. L. Hennessy said...

I so almost wrote about him for my Q post haha! Great post!

Man I miss watching Star Trek! I used to love "Q"...okay, maybe not *love* love, but definitely loved his character. Great post.

Trekkie checking in. :)

Q is also one of my favorite characters. I always loved it when he was featured in an episode!

Ooooo, I love Star Trek and I love Q!!!! Jemi, we are truly soul mates, girl! :)

I watched the original Star Trek and all the movies. I'll have to dip into the later series. It sounds like they are right up my alley. Flawed character - I have to go Han Solo.

Martina Boone said...

I loved Q! He was one of those characters that you couldn't really pigeonhole, and those are always the best characters, imho. :D

Thanks for the trip down memory lane--and the great reminder that we need to round our characters and give them a lot of different dimensions. (Pardon the pun.)

Q was one of my favorite characters of that series--the power to do pretty much whatever he wanted, somewhat of a sociopath, and always quirky.

Unknown said...

Um... never watched Star Trek!

Ooh, did you watch the movie Megamind? The animated blue guy? He was a hilarious "villain" - loved him!

T. Powell Coltrin said...

Wasn't he the best character. So annoying. Great choice.

Q was awesome. Another fantastically flawed character (although hero rather than villain) is Capt. Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly. You think he's just a selfish mercenary and smuggler, and then he shows you that extra something something that makes him utterly lovable. Han Solo falls into that category as well.

Summer - that is so cool! I didn't realize he was overly tall! :)

Ruby - I think I'd like the Closer from what I've seen, but I don't want to add in another tv show to my list! :)

Clarissa - I never did read any of those books! One day I should try them again!

Dezzy - being a Q would be all kinds of fun! :) Loved that episode too!

Julie - good choice! I've never read it because I heard the negatives about her character - but through this challenge I'm thinking I'll pick it up one day! :)

Amy - agreed :)

Talli - as an actor, I think he'd be a great part to play!

Lynn - those are awesome choices! I adore both of those characters - especially Hawkeye!!

Beth - love it! Snape is such a good choice!

Lee - I think he's great too - such fun!

Jack - you're very welcome! From the original series, I liked Khan as the best villain!

Janna - exactly! What a great part to play for an actor! :)

Margo - that was a great episode! Good to see him struggle with it all :)

Shelley - does he ever up those stakes! :)

Laura - you're so right. I smiled every time he came on screen!

SL - great minds! We've had a few similarities!

Kristi - me too. I wish they'd come up with another series for us!

Karen - yay for Trekkies!! Q sure knew how to liven things up!

Shannon - we really, really are! Love it!

Leslie - Han!!! Can't believe I didn't bring him up - he's an awesome character :)

Martina - LOVE the pun - I actually laughed out loud!!

Mary - a quirky sociopath - what every story needs... :)

Rachel - don't feel bad - neither has anyone in my family! Each to their own!

Teresa - I think so! Love the arrogance coupled with the outright stupidity! :)

Jemi Fraser said...

Bliss - yes! Great choices - 2 of my all time favourite characters!! :)

My favorite flawed character was Gomer Pyle. He was so endearingly annoying.

Jemi Fraser said...

Pat - Gomer! I'd forgotten all about him - what a great choice!

I love Q! He totally rocks. One of my fave flawed characters is Daryl from The Walking Dead.

I faintly remember him. I didn't watch much Star Trek. He sounds like a great character.

Jemi Fraser said...

Melissa - I haven't seen the Walking Dead yet. I think I'd like it but I'm avoiding adding any more shows to watch! :)

Medeia - Star Trek was one of my favourite shows growing up!
